MICHIGAN—Michigan has made major strides in keeping the coronavirus at bay in recent weeks, but the number of job seekers has remained high.
According to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan economy has been recorded at 87% of its previous pre-virus capacity back in March, as compiled by Moody’s Analytics and CNN.
The unemployment rate now stands at 8.7%, double what it was before the pandemic struck.
That’s the bad news.
The good news, though, is that Michiganders are resilient, and companies in Michigan have been on a hiring spree in recent weeks — working to align job seekers with the positions they desperately need.
Thousands of Michigan companies are now looking to fill immediate vacancies during the COVID-19 pandemic, across several different sectors of the state’s economy.
Those with a resume and a dream are encouraged to check out MiTalent.org, the state’s online jobs portal providing seekers and employers with a new way to post, search, and connect in these challenging times.
“Michiganders are tough and hard working, especially in times of crisis,” Whitmer said. “Tens of thousands of open jobs are available right now with more than 2,000 Michigan companies and organizations hiring to continue providing critical services.”
The following industries are among those hiring through the portal, which boasts over 63,000 jobs found throughout the state:
- Food service
- Cleaning businesses
How to Use the Jobs Portal
The portal is a simple and effective way for job seekers and employers to connect.
To begin using it as a job seeker, simply visit MiTalent.org and enter the zip code or city you’d like to search for jobs, as well as the nearby radius you’d like to include, in miles.
You can also utilize the “posted within” feature to sort by when each job was posted — from one day to one month.
If you’re an employer with an increased need for talent due to COVID-19, you can submit a listing of your own by entering information on the COVID-19 On Demand Hiring Intake Form, which can be found here.
Companies are asked to enter their name, website, and a company contact person including name, title, email and phone number. They may also enter job descriptions, wages, the number of workers sought and much more.
New jobs are constantly being posted to the portal, offering a new path forward for the millions of people impacted by the coronavirus.
“While many Michiganders are being displaced from work, thousands of employers have immediate job openings,” said LEO Director Jeff Donofrio. “We encourage those who are currently unemployed to search available jobs at MiTalent.org.”
