Stuffing is the quintessential Thanksgiving side and you know you’re “up north” when you hit this city: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shares her favorites of being a Michigander.

LANSING, Mich.—We’ve learned a lot about Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer since she took office.

At first glance she’s certainly a Spartans fan, drinks local beer first, loves houndstooth, and likes to be on the ground getting involved with people.

Then we saw more about her leadership when families were hit hard with weather disasters like in Midland after the dam failure caused by outdated infrastructure and changing weather patterns flooding the state.

We learned even more when we saw her take a lot of action during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep Michiganders safe; she doesn’t waver in the face of criticism from her opponents.

But when The ‘Gander got our first exclusive with the Governor, we wanted to go beyond policy and get to her person—her real Michigander. (Though we did talk to her about the state’s latest water crises, overcoming pandemic fatigue, and the recent infrastructure plan).

We challenged her to our favorite interview tradition: The ‘Gander Lightning Round—it’s 10 rapid-fire questions and the only right answer is whatever comes to mind first.

She agreed, and while her answers are sure to spark debate, it’s over issues we all can agree on in Michigan. (Spoiler alert: We stumped her once to where she couldn’t choose just one thing).
