Try a different sort of floral arrangement this year.
Valentine’s Day is approaching—and like many Michiganders, you’re probably just beginning to search for something special to give to someone, well, special. It’s the season of fancy dinner reservations, gaudy floral arrangements, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, and overpriced jewelry. And this year, we’re breaking those traditions and replacing our usual gift guide with something you may find a bit more useful.
This is The MichiGanja Report’s totally biased guide to seven cannabis products—all made right here in Michigan—that’ll make a more interesting (and probably cheaper) gift than a dozen roses. Click here to subscribe to our free cannabis newsletter, and we’ll send over more product recommendations.
Detroit Edibles
This Detroit-based company has a simple mission: create the best handcrafted premium cannabis edibles in the state. And even as the recreational pot market has rapidly expanded in Michigan, these Motor City pot cuisiniers are definitely still in the running for that ambitious title.
You can find Detroit Edibles products at several dozen retailers across the state—in fact, you may find it more difficult to find a pot shop that doesn’t carry at least a few of its products. And there are a lot of them, including dozens of different THC-infused chocolates, fudge, rice krispy treats, granola bars, and drink mixes. It even makes its own canna-honey and peanut butter.
The Best Part: The culinary team at Detroit Edibles only uses high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. And as a Michigan-based company, they’re darn proud of those Michigan roots.
Skymint Reserve
One of Michigan’s largest cannabis retailers has a loosely kept secret that you should know: They’re saving the really good stuff for their premium product line, and it’s worth the extra cash.
Skymint Reserve is a pricier lineup of flower and concentrates that are designed to provide an “elevated” cannabis experience for experienced tokers—or those who just want good weed.
Plus, you can rest easy knowing you bought some safe, quality cannabis for your sweetheart.
For over a year, “master cultivators” at Skymint searched for superior strains from top breeders in Michigan and sourced over 60 genetic varieties to find the highest quality bud on the market, according to the Skymint website. And the proof is in the pudding—er, solventless rosin.
Cheaper strains from Skymint already pack a pretty serious punch, but those that carry the bespoke “Reserve” label have been known to launch even veteran potheads to the moon. Amateur smokers may be able to get away with splitting a pre-roll for a full evening of giggles.
Pro Tip: Detroit Runtz—a strain that obviously has some Motor City roots—may be the best choice to Netflix and chill (or HBO Max and climax). Expect a complex aroma of fruit and gas with vibrant flavors of tropical citrus, sour berries, and a touch of earthiness. A few tokes will leave you floaty yet clear headed, with a strong high that’s equal parts energizing and cozy.
Astro Hippie by GRiZ
Grant Richard Kwiecinski, better known as GRiZ, is a bit of a celebrity in the Mitten. And if you haven’t heard of him, you should probably at least know about his weed. It’s pretty good stuff.
Our suggestion: Buy a bag for your Valentine, and smoke it while listening to his latest album.
After growing up in Detroit and graduating from Michigan State University, GRiZ, of course, went on to be an electronic music superstar. But in addition to knowing how to rock a funky sax solo, Kwieceinski also knows a thing or two about cannabis. In late 2021, he partnered with Pure Options to launch his brand Astro Hippie. And the latest strains are just as electric as his music.
Pro Tip: The Tie-Die Medusa strain tastes like sugar-coated fruit on top of a scoop of ice cream, and the high usually starts with the giggles before tapering off into a relaxing body buzz. If that sounds too sweet, then check out G-Funk. This woody, pine and herbal strain has been a staple of the Astro Hippy lineup since its inception—and it’s great for unwinding with your sweetheart after a stressful day.
Lume Gold Label Live Rosin 1g All-in-Ones
If you’d rather not walk into your dinner reservation smelling like a Cypress Hill concert, then you might want to consider this next cannagift instead. It’s a bit more discreet, but just as potent.
The people behind Michigan’s largest cannabis company, Lume, has a bold claim to go along with their latest product line. They’re calling their newest disposable vape pens the “best burn on earth.” And without having the resources to try every other vape pen on the market, we’re inclined to believe them.
The miniature “Rip” vaporizer pen is filled with a full gram of solventless live rosin, which is known to be one of the cleanest ways to consume cannabis. It’s also designed to be as convenient as possible. There’s no buttons; no charger. You just pull it out of the package, and puff away. You can easily stash it in your pocket, and then just throw it away when it’s empty.
This vape was also made with purpose. According to Lume, the Rip was made to optimize every toke with a bottom-feed reservoir system and a temperature-controlled design. And unlike your gas station vape pen, this one has a wick and coil system that’s made specifically for live rosin.
Pro Tip: Get it delivered. Lume offers free delivery (including in the Upper Peninsula) on all orders of $75 or more. First-timers are also eligible for a 10% discount—and that offer can be stacked on to other deals, including a 30% discount off an entire order for first-time customers.
Little Saints Plant Magic Mocktails (CBD)
Detroiter Megan Klein—also known as the “Terpene Queen—launched this company during the pandemic because she was sick of booze, and the hangover that always ruins the next morning. And after failing to find any interesting alternatives on the market, she decided to make her own.
The result is a tasty alternative for couples who want to skip the hangover on Feb. 15. Reminder: Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, and you probably still have to work the next day.
Little Saints are designed as transformative, non-alcoholic drinks that taste more like a cocktail than a seltzer, and also carry the uplifting and functional benefits of CBD, terpenes, and Reishi mushroom extracts. When combined, this “magic” combination is designed to inspire a mood-lifting and sensory experience—without any of the icky feelings that alcohol can create.
The Best Part: Because it doesn’t contain any THC, you can still reap the benefits of natural cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant without getting too high to make it to your dinner reservation.
