The Midwest Invitational Rodeo returns to Flint in June. Here’s why experiencing the event is a must.
The historic traditions of Black rodeo culture will come alive in Flint this summer as the Midwest Invitational Rodeo (MWIR) returns to the Genesee County Fairgrounds. This two-day spectacular—scheduled for June 13-14, 2025—combines thrilling rodeo competition with a groundbreaking focus on community health and wellness.
A celebration of heritage & athleticism
The event showcases elite African American rodeo athletes competing in classic events like bull riding, steer wrestling, and barrel racing.
In a press release, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley emphasized the event’s significance, stating, “Flint is proud to once again host this thrilling rodeo event, giving our families and youth an opportunity to experience the incredible skill and legacy of Black cowboys and cowgirls. We are not only celebrating history and sportsmanship, but we’re also opening doors for the next generation to see what’s possible.”
New additions enhance community impact
This year’s rodeo introduces two major additions to the program.
The inaugural MWIR Golf Tournament kicks off the festivities on Friday morning at Swartz Creek Golf Course. Saturday brings the new EmpowerMENt Health & Wellness Fair, a free community event running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organized in partnership with Genesee Health System, the fair offers health screenings, panel discussions, and access to vital community resources.
Competition highlights
The main rodeo events begin at 7 p.m. both evenings, featuring:
- Professional bull riding
- Bareback bronc riding
- High-speed barrel racing
- Steer wrestling
- Women’s steer undecorating
MWIR Owner and CEO Nicole Scott shared her vision for the expanded event: “This event is bigger and better than ever before. We’re bringing history, culture, and heart-pounding competition to Flint, while also investing in the health and future of our community.”
