Both OVD Insurance and TYC Americas announced plan to expand operations and create hundreds of Michigan jobs.
In a significant boost to Michigan’s economy, two major companies are expanding their operations, bringing hundreds of new jobs and substantial investments to Kent and Oakland counties. The moves by OVD Insurance and TYC Americas represent a combined investment of nearly $31 million and will create 240 new positions, highlighting Michigan’s growing appeal as a destination for both professional services and manufacturing.
OVD Insurance expands with new Grand Rapids headquarters
OVD Insurance, experiencing remarkable growth over the past five years, is set to establish its new headquarters in downtown Grand Rapids. The company has acquired a seven-story, 99,000-square-foot building at 37 Ottawa Avenue Northwest, planning to invest over $12 million in the facility. This expansion will create 131 new positions with competitive starting wages of $30 per hour.
“Being part of Grand Rapids’ ongoing growth is an exciting opportunity. Through this move, we’re grateful to partner with CWD, The Right Place, the City of Grand Rapids, and the MEDC,” said Josh Van Vels, President of OVD Insurance. “This new location is more than just an office—it’s an investment in our culture, our people, and the future of OVD Insurance.”
TYC Americas brings manufacturing operations to Wixom
In a separate development, automotive lighting manufacturer TYC Americas is establishing a new facility in Wixom, relocating operations from China and Taiwan to Michigan. The company plans to invest $18.75 million and create 109 new jobs, with wages ranging from $24 to $55 per hour plus benefits.
The company chose Michigan over Georgia, citing the state’s skilled workforce and the advantage of reducing overseas supply chain complications. “TYC is proud to announce the opening of the Michigan Mobility Center in Wixom,” stated John Kovalik, TYC Americas OEM Operations and Strategy.
State support and economic impact
Both expansions receive backing from the Michigan Strategic Fund through the Michigan Business Development Program, with OVD Insurance receiving a $1 million performance-based grant and TYC Americas receiving $981,000. Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the significance of these investments, stating, “Both these companies are betting on Michigan and doubling down on our state because of our strong network of talent and quality of life.”
The developments represent a significant win for Michigan’s economic development strategy, focusing on attracting and retaining both professional services and manufacturing operations while creating high-paying jobs across different sectors.
