A suspected measles case in Eaton County, Michigan, has health officials on high alert as they work to notify residents who may have been exposed to the highly infectious disease. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD) is taking proactive steps while awaiting test results, highlighting the critical window for potential preventive treatment for those exposed.

Health department alerts public to possible measles exposure

According to an April 18 EDHD press release, two popular dining establishments in Michigan have been identified as potential exposure sites, prompting health officials to issue an urgent public notification. The locations include King Ocean Crab restaurant in Lansing on April 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Bad Brads BBQ in Orion Township on April 13 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

BEDHD Medical Director Dr. Julie Kehdi emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are acting out of an abundance of caution to notify the public as quickly as possible. Measles spreads easily and can have serious health consequences, especially for children and people with weakened immune systems. We encourage anyone who may have been exposed to take action right away and check their vaccination status.”

Time-sensitive prevention measures available

Health officials stress that individuals exposed to measles have a narrow window of opportunity for post-exposure treatment. Those exposed on April 13 must receive treatment by Saturday, April 19 for it to be effective. The virus can spread through direct contact and airborne transmission, with infected individuals being contagious from four days before to four days after the rash appearance.

Monitoring and protection guidelines

Anyone potentially exposed should:

• Watch for symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose, or rash for 21 days after exposure
• Contact healthcare providers before visiting to prevent spreading the virus
• Check their vaccination status – two doses of MMR vaccine typically provide protection
• Note that those born before 1957 or with previous measles infection are generally considered immune
