MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.

Here are six things you need to know this week:

HOT BOX HIGH: The superintendent and food services director at Fitzgerald Public Schools in Warren were reportedly arrested for driving under the influence and possessing marijuana on school grounds after they allegedly smoked weed together in a parked car near the high school.

TOP PRODUCTS: Detroit Metro Times recently published a definitive guidebook to Michigan’s top cannabis strains for just about every occasion—including for those who want to “blast off.”

CANNA-JUSTICE: Four people were reportedly arrested for breaking into Potter’s Cannabis Boutique in Battle Creek, which has been robbed twice in the last two months. Police also reportedly seized more than 200 lbs. of weed (and about a pound of mushrooms) from an unlicensed dispensary in Detroit after it was allegedly caught selling weed to minors.

BAD TRIP: Negative interactions with cannabis—including youth hospital visits due to cannabis intoxication—are reportedly on the rise as more marijuana products hit the market in Michigan. A new health issue, cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, is also gaining some national attention.

MATURING MARKET: Michigan dispensaries set another record with more than $3 billion in cannabis products sold last year. But the market is reportedly showing new signs of maturity, including about $4 million less weed sold in December 2024 compared to December 2023.

NEW IN TOWN: Forty Acres House of Cannabis and NOXX are reportedly working together to open a new dispensary this summer at 2440 28th St. in Grand Rapids. The new store will feature a dedicated retail space for Forty Acres products, as well as other top cannabis brands.
