You scream. I scream. Michiganders all scream for ice cream—but from where?

Editor’s Note: The topic for this story was picked exclusively by our readers, who voted last month to see us assemble a list of some of Michigan’s top-rated ice cream shops and creameries—no big ice cream chains, only locally operated businesses with one or two stores. This directory is also evolving to include reader suggestions and fan favorites. Don’t see your favorite local creamery on the list? Send an email to [email protected]; we’ll add it in. MICHIGAN—July is National Ice Cream Month. And in the Mitten, that’s a pretty big deal.

According to the Michigan Ag Council, Michigan’s dairy cows produce a whopping 11 billion pounds of milk annually, which translates to 438 million gallons of ice cream (or about 14 billion scoops) every year. In other words, there will be plenty of ice cream to go around this summer.

Now all you have to do is decide which creamery or ice cream shop is worth your time—which can still be a pretty difficult decision given the sheer enormity of retailers spread across the state. So to help aid your sweet tooth this summer, we’ve compiled the following directory to help you get the inside scoop on some of Michigan’s tastiest ice cream shops and creameries. We’ll keep adding in more options throughout the summer, as well as direct feedback from readers.
