MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.
Here are six things you need to know this week:
GET BAKED: A popular Chicago-based chain that sells cannabis-infused baked goods, coffee beverages, and lemonades is reportedly opening a new location in Detroit later this summer.
TOO MUCH WEED: The owner of a large West Michigan cannabis growing operation was reportedly caught driving around with more than 40 lbs. of marijuana—so now state regulators are trying to go after his company for allegedly distributing weed to the illegal market.
STATE SURPRISE: The state Cannabis Regulatory Agency is doing away with its semi-annual scheduled inspections at licensed marijuana stores and related facilities and instead will have its regulation officers conduct surprise visits, according to reports in the Oakland Press.
BUCKEYE BLUES: Analysts reportedly expect the recent legalization of weed in Ohio will take some business away from Michigan dispensaries—particularly those located along the border. But for now, the sky-high prices in Ohio simply can’t compete with those in Michigan.
POT POLLING: A new poll reportedly shows that voters in swing states strongly support the legalization of recreational marijuana—which could spell good news for the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is an advocate for cannabis policy reform.
WRIST SLAP: Cannabis lobbyist Vince Brown and businessman John Dalaly have reportedly been released early from federal prison after being convicted of bribing former Republican House Speaker and Michigan Medical Marijuana Licensing Board Chairman Rick Johnson.
