MICHIGAN—The grass is always greener in the Mitten, especially when it comes to cannabis news. From policy updates to product drops, there’s always something new hitting the scene.
Here’s what’s rolling through this week:
HIGH COURT, HIGHER RULING: The Michigan Supreme Court burned a 25-year-old legal precedent, ruling that the smell of marijuana alone isn’t enough to justify searching a vehicle without a warrant. The ruling could reportedly have major implications for traffic stops statewide.
CANNABIS 101: Northern Michigan University is bringing together students, scholars, and industry leaders for the Great Lakes Cannabis Collaboration Conference on April 22. The event is slated to feature expert speakers, student presentations, and panels focused on education, research, and the future of Michigan’s marijuana industry. Tickets start at $20; find them here.
LOCK IT DOWN: A record number of Michigan kids were hospitalized in 2024 after accidentally getting into cannabis, according to new data from the state’s poison control center. Of nearly 400 reported cases, more than 100 ended in hospital stays—with 23 kids in critical care. In response, regulators are reportedly urging parents to do a better job locking up their stash.
PRE-OP HONESTY: Michigan anesthesiologists are reportedly urging patients to be blunt with their doctor about their cannabis use before surgery—because failing to disclose those details can lead to complications with anesthesia, including a higher risk of heart or respiratory issues.
GOING GREEN: Michigan regulators are reportedly proposing a new rule that would allow dispensaries to collect and recycle used vape cartridges. It’s a long-overdue step toward cleaning up an industry that’s been dumping toxic, single-use vapes by the truckload.
