MICHIGAN—Cannabis might help to mellow you out. But the multi-billion-dollar industry behind your favorite plant is always sparking up fresh news, noise, and nonsense.
Here are the latest headlines from the weed world:
SLIGHT SLIP: Weed sales in Michigan dipped slightly last month, totaling $272.6 million—a 2.5% drop from last year. State reports show medical sales are basically toast ($0.6M total) while adult-use sales hold steady. Meanwhile, flower prices hit a new record low of just over $1,000 per pound, continuing a trend that’s making it cheaper than ever to light up in Michigan.
OUT-OF-STATE OPS: Two of Michigan’s biggest weed companies are expanding operations and taking their talents east. C3 Industries (aka High Profile) opened its second dispensary in Connecticut earlier this month. Quality Roots is also set to expand retail sales to New Jersey.
ZONING DRAMA: Tensions are rising in Niles Township, where residents are calling out local leaders for fast-tracking cannabis licenses, even though the zoning ordinance meant to regulate them is legally on hold. In a scathing letter to the editor, one resident accused township officials of using a loophole to sidestep voter input and push dispensaries through with little oversight.
EDIBLE EMERGENCY: The superintendent at Detroit Public Schools is sounding the alarm about students getting sick from cannabis edibles, often without even realizing what they’re consuming. In response, district officials are pushing for a new public awareness campaign—think ‘90s anti-smoking PSAs—to help parents and kids avoid accidental ingestion.
HEALTH HAZE: A recent Washington Post analysis took a sobering look at cannabis for medical use, and it’s not all good vibes. While there’s solid evidence that weed can help with chronic pain and chemo-related nausea, experts warn older adults to tread carefully.
FAKE WEED WARNING: Some Michigan cannabis products aren’t what they seem. A new report out of Central Lake warns that lab-made THC is sneaking onto dispensary shelves. It’s being sold as “cannabis,” but it’s actually synthesized from hemp or cooked up in a lab. The kicker? You can’t tell by looking, and these products often dodge state testing and safety rules.
