6 quick hits of cannabis news from across Michigan

MICHIGAN—If it feels like the weed news never stops, you’re not wrong.

Here are some of the latest headlines that have been rolling through the state:

HOMEGROWN HUSTLE: Two Michigan-based cannabis companies are spreading their roots out of state. Ann Arbor’s C3 Industries is opening a new dispensary in Connecticut, marking its 29th retail location nationwide. Meanwhile, Redemption Cannabis is expanding into West Virginia, where founder Ryan Basore was once incarcerated for a non-violent cannabis offense.

LAST CHANCE: Time is running out for customers at Gage and Cookies dispensaries. TerrAscend is shutting down all 20 of its Michigan stores this summer—citing the state as “an extremely difficult market”—which means the clock is ticking to grab whatever is left on the shelves. Because once it’s gone, it’s not getting restocked.

BAD INFLUENCE: A mentor at a juvenile detention center in Wayne County is facing charges after allegedly giving cannabis-infused gummies to four 17-year-olds in custody. Staff launched an investigation after noticing the teens were lethargic, incoherent, and visibly impaired.

END OF AN ERA: Arbors Wellness in Ann Arbor is reportedly closing up shop this month. The dispensary made what’s believed to be Michigan’s first-ever legal recreational sale back in 2019, when it sold a handful of pre-rolled joints to the late cannabis legend, John Sinclair.

FIRE STATION FIGHT: C3 Industries wants to open a new dispensary inside an old fire station in Pinckney and is working with village officials in hopes of securing the town’s only license.

TAX TROUBLE: Cannabis prices are still sliding across Michigan. And with less tax revenue, local governments could soon start feeling the squeeze. Industry leaders are also warning that small growers won’t survive the state’s over-saturated cannabis market without reform.
