MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.
Here are 8 things you need to know this week:
BILLIONS IN BUD: Michigan is reportedly on the verge of hitting $10 billion in weed sales since recreational cannabis was legalized about five years ago—which means only California has a bigger marijuana market and only Alaska has a higher volume of sales on a per capita basis.
OHIO BLUES: Cannabis prices have steadily declined in Ohio, which only recently legalized weed, as the state’s residents flock to Michigan to find better products at a lower price.
TOUGHER TIMES: It’s not all roses in the Mitten. One of the country’s largest cannabis operators—LivWell—is abandoning its newly unionized Michigan growing operations amid the continued decline in marijuana prices, according to recent reports in Crain’s Detroit Business.
CANDY CONUNDRUM: Hospitalizations of young children for accidental cannabis ingestion are reportedly rising in Michigan and across the country—with more than 400 kids under age 6 having gone to the emergency department for marijuana ingestion between 2020 and 2022.
BAY CITY BREAK-IN: Cops are reportedly investigating a burglary at PUFF Cannabis Co. in Bangor Township that allegedly occurred in the early morning hours on Nov. 21. When police officers arrived, two windows were smashed out and the culprits had already fled.
PRE-ROLLS IN PONTIAC: The city of Pontiac is now accepting license applications for recreational marijuana dispensaries, but the timing is reportedly posing a challenge for would-be operators as weed prices (and potential profit margins) remain at record-lows across Michigan.
BEST IN CLASS: Wojo, a Pinconning-based company, is making headlines for crafting one of the most sought-after cannabis products in the industry: a high-quality, solventless cannabis concentrate that is prized among stoners for its purity, potency, and robust flavor profile.
TOP OF THE TOWN: City Pulse’s annual Top of the Town contest recently put a spotlight on three cannabis companies in the city of Lansing: Pincanna, Pure Options, and Pleasantrees.
