In a celebration of heritage, education, and community dialogue, Flint, Michigan is set to host a compelling series of Black History Month events at the City of Flint Dome. Two days of cultural celebration and dialogue
The city’s Black History Month celebration kicks off with a unique documentary screening titled “St. John Street: Story of a Neighborhood” on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at noon. This special presentation focuses on one of Flint’s historically significant African American communities, offering senior citizens a chance to reconnect with their roots and share their memories of this vital neighborhood.
Following the documentary, on Friday, February 28, high school students will gather for the “Today is Tomorrow’s History” program. This youth-focused event features a special appearance by Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilcrest, along with cultural performances and interactive sessions designed to inspire the next generation of leaders.
The series culminates in a Community Town Hall Meeting Friday evening, which will address contemporary challenges facing Black youth. ABC 12 News’ Dawn Jones will moderate this crucial discussion, bringing together community leaders, educators, and young voices to explore topics ranging from racial identity to educational opportunities.
A mayoral call for community participation
Emphasizing the significance of these events, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley stated: “Black History Month is a time for reflection, recognition, and action. These programs highlight where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going. We invite the entire community to join us as we honor our history and shape our future together.”
All events will take place at the City of Flint Dome, with Friday’s town hall doors opening at 5:30 PM for a 6:00 PM start. Community members seeking additional information can contact the mayor’s office at 810-766-7346.
