From Ann Arbor to Traverse City—here are some places in Michigan to pick out the perfect pies for Thanksgiving.
MICHIGAN—Some people do not like to bake. Maybe they’d rather spend their time doing other things when preparing to host or attend Thanksgiving dinner—or maybe they’re just not too great at baking. Buying a locally baked pie is the perfect solution. You and your family can enjoy homemade scrumptious goodness without all the fuss, and local pie shops and bakeries can benefit from your business.
Achatz Handmade Pie Company
75700 North Ave., Armada
The original Achatz Handmade Pie Company is in Armada, but they also have locations in Troy, Beverly Hills, Chesterfield, Shelby, and Oxford. You can find traditional fruit pies like apple, cherry, blueberry, and pumpkin pies, but Achatz’s signature Michigan 4-Berry pie, with Michigan tart cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries, is a best-seller you have to try. They focus on using the freshest, most high-quality ingredients without chemicals, ensuring your pie is scrumptious and healthy to the last bite.
Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe
108 N. Bridge St., DeWitt
This charming gem of a bakery has received national recognition, winning numerous regional and national pie competitions. If you live near DeWitt, Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe is definitely the go-to spot for your Thanksgiving pies. You can choose from about a dozen different pies including caramel apple, pumpkin, and pecan. But, you might also want to try some specialties, like a Holiday Pie (cherry, blueberry, raspberry, and cranberry with a touch of orange zest) or a pumpkin cheesecake praline pie. Tom’s Cheery Cherry Pie won Food Network’s Best Pie in America with its mixture of sweet and tart cherries and blueberries.
Zingerman’s Bakehouse
713 S. Main St., Ann Arbor
The team at Zingerman’s Bakehouse pride themselves on using the freshest local ingredients they can find, and it shows in each pie they bake. They use organic flour varieties and even grind flour on their own stone mill. You will find farm-fresh sour cream and milk in their recipes, as well as Wisconsin butter, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, Michigan honey, local farm apples, cage-free eggs, and more. Their Perky Pecan Pie, Jumbleberry Pie, and Rustic Apple Pie will make a nice addition to any Thanksgiving feast.
CRUST
104 W. Caroline St., Fenton
Voted Michigan’s Best Bakery in 2018, just six years after its founding, it’s no surprise that you will still find great local pies at CRUST – a baking company. They focus on creating artisan baked goods with locally sourced, all-natural ingredients. CRUST offers traditional pecan, apple, and pumpkin pies for your Thanksgiving dinner. But if you want to switch it up, try their cranberry walnut pie, which consists of tart cranberries and toasted walnuts atop a brown custard sugar filling.
Sister Pie
8066 Kercheval St., Detroit
For a truly unique spin on traditional holiday pies, consider preordering one from Sister Pie if you live in the Detroit area. Make sure to order soon because they can only make so many pies, and they’ll cut off preorders when they reach their limit. Sister Pies is offering four pies for Thanksgiving 2022: apple butter custard, classic sweet potato, cranberry crumble, and spiced chocolate pecan. Sister Pie’s delectable pies are so popular that they have a limit of four per person, even when you preorder.
Jawor Brothers Blueberry Farms & Country Store
7545 Heights Ravenna Road, Ravenna
If you live anywhere in the Grand Rapids area and your family loves blueberry pie, you need to make the trek out to Jawor Brothers Country Store in Ravenna. They are currently closed for the season, but open on Nov. 19 to sell their fabulous pies during Thanksgiving week. All orders for pick up on Thanksgiving week must be in by Nov. 19. The real attraction is the blueberry pie—blueberry crumble pie, blueberry double crust pie, and cream cheese blueberry pie—though they do offer apple and cherry pies as well.
Grand Traverse Pie Company
525 W. Front St., Traverse City
Grand Traverse Pie Company opened the doors at its original location in Traverse City in 1996, but has since expanded to 14 other locations, including 11 in Michigan, plus a food truck. This homegrown enterprise is among the bakeries with the most flavor options on this list. Whether you want a fruit pie, nut pie, cream pie, or a combination, you will find what you need for your Thanksgiving meal. Keep in mind that the menu varies among locations. You can count on finding at least one variety of Michigan Montmorency cherry pies (Old Mission Cherry is an Oprah favorite) and various types of apple pies made with Northern Spy apples. Customers who love the classics will also find pecan, chocolate pecan, pumpkin, strawberry rhubarb, and more.
