From Eminem to Jeff Daniels, here are some of the most recognizable celebrities who own mansions in Michigan. Could you be their neighbor?
Michigan is the birthplace of many celebrities, from Madonna and Selma Blair to Kristen Bell to Taylor Lautner, but many famous figures have moved on from the Mitten. Some celebrities, however, have stayed the course and either never left their home state or returned home after a hiatus. (And who could blame them for coming back? Michigan has it all!)
You’ll most likely recognize some of the celebrities on this list, but there may be a few that surprise you. For instance, I didn’t know that one of my favorite actresses, Sandra Bullock, is rumored to own a home in Pentwater, Michigan. We were able to dig up some other famous celebrities who own mansions in Michigan, so take a look through the list and see if there are any you know.
1. Eminem
Unsurprisingly, Michigan native rapper Eminem owns a mansion in Michigan. In fact, he has owned several mansions in the mitten. His famous Rochester Hills mansion, which clocked in at over 17,000 square feet and featured waterfalls, elevators, a pool, a hot tub, a cabana, and a guest house, sold for 2.3 million in 2017. Marshall Mathers actually lost money on the mansion, because he had originally purchased the home in 2003 for 4.75 million.
Today, Mathers lives in a smaller 8,900-square-foot home in Clinton Township that he purchased in 2000 for 1.4 million.
2. Tony Hawk
Former professional skateboarder Tony Hawk owns a home in Woodbridge, Michigan. It may not quite be a mansion, and technically Hawk doesn’t live there or even visit there, but it’s still a celeb-owned home in the mitten. The Detroit Press reported that Hawk purchased the home in 2016 in order to ” put their money and their stamp on the city.”
Hawk’s wife is originally from the Metro Detroit area, so the city was important to the couple. And of course, the home is near The Wig, a skateboarding park that Hawk visited and (helped fund) near the time of the sale. The century-old house is used as a three-apartment complex today and was once a hospital, so it’s also a fascinating piece of Michigan history.
3. Kirk Gibson
The famous dual-sport athlete Kirk Gibon was a Detroit Tigers outfielder and MSU wide receiver who has lived in Michigan his entire life. A Michigan native (he was born in Pontiac), he now lives in a Grosse Pointe home and works as a special assistant to the Tigers. Gibson also has Parkinson’s disease and is an outspoken advocate and activist for the condition and research. The Kirk Gibson Center in Farmington Hills is slated to open in 2025 as the country’s first dedicated wellness center for Parkinson’s.
4. Tim Allen
I find it interesting to see how many celebrities who were born and raised in Michigan never lost their love of the state—it’s a testament to how much Michigan has to offer when celebrities continue to live here. Allen was born in Michigan and has continued to own a home and even a campground here in the Mitten.
Allen and his wife own a cherry farm in Omena Point and have also purchased a 26-acre campground on Lake Michigan.
5. Amy Smart
“Just Friends” happens to be one of my very favorite movies, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that the film’s leading actress, Amy Smart, also calls Michigan home. Smart and her husband, Carter Oosterhouse, a celebrity carpenter and Michigan native, even gave a full tour to People Magazine of their Traverse City farmhouse.
The couple purchased the 100-year-old farmhouse and co-owns Bonobo Winery in Traverse City as well. Their current mansion on Island View Rd. is estimated to be worth over $2 million. Smart is active on Instagram as a proud Michigander.
6. Jeff Daniels
Actor Jeff Daniels has been known in the Hollywood circle for his staunch support of the state. Even at the height of his fame, he chose to live in Michigan rather than on the West Coast. Daniels was born and raised in Michigan, and he and his wife have called Chelsea home since the late 1970s.
His family has been deeply immersed in the local town, even founding the Purple Rose Theatre Company to share his love of acting with the area.
7. Dave Couiler
Good ol’ Joey from “Full House” has been open about being a “Michigander for life” and currently calls St. Clair Shores home. In 2020, he shared an Instagram post about purchasing and renovating a lakefront home in his hometown of St. Clair Shores.
“We are so lucky,” he gushed. “I grew up on Lake St. Clair. A little over a year ago, I discovered the most incredible lakefront property. It was in really rough shape. It was littered with trash and dead trees. It took almost 6 months to clear. But underneath all of that was over 3 waterfront acres and another acre and a half with a cove and breakwater. Now I get to take my boat there, get on my tractor, and keep it looking beautiful. Yes. I have to pinch myself. A poor kid from St. Clair Shores, Mich. owns a slice of heaven. It only took 4 decades of hard work to get here.”
8. Kid Rock
Singer Kid Rock sold his Dwight St. Detroit mansion back in 2022 after originally listing it in 2020. The mansion was modestly sized at 5,806 square feet, but it was just one of the singer’s multiple homes and featured stunning views of the Detroit River and Belle Isle as one of only six riverfront mansions in Detroit. According to Zillow, it sold for 2.2 million.
MLive reported that the rapper left a large amount of personal items there, which led the purchaser to instigate plans to leave it preserved as a way to attract attention and host events. Kid Rock rather infamously portrayed an image as a humble Detroit city boy, but actually grew up in the suburbs one hour north of D-town in a very affluent mansion, funded by his parents, who owned multiple car dealerships in the area. Kid Rock is thought to own a home in Clarkston, Mich., today, along with homes in other states.
9. Bob Seger
Bob Seger, now 79 years old, is a famous singer and songwriter who broke through in the 1960s with hits like “Old Time Rock and Roll” and “Like a Rock” (the theme song in Chevy Truck commercials). He was born in Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and raised in Ann Arbor, and despite reaching worldwide fame, has always made Michigan his home.
In 2010, he started construction on a 30,000-square-foot mansion in Orchard Lake, a suburb of West Bloomfield, MI. He and his wife had previously owned a home in the area before buying the adjoining lot, demolishing their first home, and building the mega mansion.
10. Sandra Bullock
It has not been officially confirmed, but it’s rumored that actress Sandra Bullock owns a home in Pentwater, Mich. At the very least, she has been spotted vacationing in the West Michigan area several times, so if she doesn’t officially own a mansion here, you can bet your Michigan dollar that she at least rents one for some downtime in the mitten.
Plus, she has her own bench bearing a plaque with her name on it, which must be quite exciting.
