We love the thrill of a new restaurant opening. There’s something satisfying about watching talented, ambitious chefs stake their claim in a food-loving city like Grand Rapids. And when our readers get excited about new restaurant openings, we know something special is happening. 

Grand Rapids has always known good food, so we can be very particular about the new kids on the block. How do they measure up to the older, traditional restaurants that we love?

That’s why this readers’ poll is so important. With well over a dozen new restaurants opening in the past year or so, our readers narrowed the field to three new restaurants that rose above the rest. What’s remarkable is that each of these restaurants represents a different dining experience. So, we are happy to share the stories and flavors behind your picks for the best new restaurants in Grand Rapids.

3. Gin Gin’s

Inside a thoughtfully renovated historic building in Grand Rapids, Gin Gin’s arrived on the scene in late spring 2024. And it didn’t take long for it to make a name for itself. The restaurant is the latest endeavor from brothers David and Paul Reinert, already well known for their popular local establishments, Butcher’s Union and O’Toole’s Public House. This time around, they’ve created something a bit more refined and personal, naming the place after their Aunt Gin and channeling her spirit into the menu and atmosphere.

At Gin Gin’s, you’ll find dishes like dry-aged steaks, elegant handmade pastas, and seafood selections like trout or black cod. If you love small plates, you can indulge in rich starters like wagyu meatballs, steak tartare, and baked crab cakes, as well as an impressive selection of sides ranging from loaded baked potatoes to roasted asparagus. 

The cocktail list leans heavily into gin, obviously, but also gives proper respect to classics like the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned. And don’t even think about skipping dessert when you’re here. The lemon crème brûlée is bright and creamy, while Aunt Gin’s cheesecake delivers a nostalgic, decadent finish. It’s a must-have.

Gin Gin’s interior is both handsome and inviting. There’s warm wood, low lighting, plush leather seating, and an open kitchen that adds a sense of excitement. A secluded courtyard offers a little breathing room outside, while a tucked-away speakeasy lounge gives the space a secretive edge. Everything feels intentional, from the textures in the woodwork to the layout of the dining room.

Whether you’re there for a quiet dinner or a cocktail-driven date night, it’s already clear this is one of the city’s new standouts.

2. SILVA

In second place by a single vote, SILVA has made a serious impression as one of the most entertaining new restaurant concepts in Grand Rapids. SILVA bills itself as “dinnertainment,” offering fun yet sophisticated food alongside live performances, curated cocktails, and even Bocce. 

The space feels like something out of a modern-day carnival. Seriously. But along with that sense of wonder comes a touch of class. The dining area has high ceilings, exposed brick, and warm wood. Plush booths and a gleaming bar on the main floor welcome you, while an upstairs mezzanine offers extra seating, balcony views, and a private event room overlooking the indoor bocce courts. The venue’s playful spirit shines through in its décor and in surprising details like salvaged stained-glass windows from a Kalamazoo church.

In early 2025, local entrepreneur Mark Secchia unveiled SILVA, inspired by his global travels, and named for the Latin word for “forest” or “woodland.” This choice nods to the venue’s material roots and architectural character, as well as its intent to cultivate new kinds of social gatherings in Grand Rapids.

The menu at SILVA is as eclectic as the venue. Familiar dishes such as the Wagyu Flatiron Steak, Shepherd’s Pie, and Braised Short Rib are made with delicious and surprising accompaniments. The bocce courts opened officially to the public in April 2025, complete with a launch week offering free play. It was an open invitation to the community to experience Silva beyond a meal. 

In short, SILVA has introduced itself with a fusion of approachable food, sport, and spectacle. It’s a playful extravaganza, part elegant supper club, and entirely its own thing. If you haven’t already gone, go ahead and try one of the city’s most talked-about new destinations.

1. Garden District

And finally, our readers’ favorite new restaurant in Grand Rapids, which won by just one vote: Garden District. Located on Monroe Center Street, Garden District surprised many with its authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine. Despite the fact that Midwest comfort dining dominates in our city, Garden District’s unique warming flavors fit right in.

Garden District offers a richly flavored Cajun–Creole experience wrapped in thoughtful hospitality. The restaurant officially opened its doors on February 1, 2025, when proprietors Raphael and Jessica Jones transformed the former Monsoon Vietnamese space into a warm tribute to their family’s roots in New Orleans.

Here, you’ll find a cozy dining room with crystal chandeliers and moody purple lighting over the bar. An open kitchen draws you into the cooking process, while an outdoor patio expands the ambiance during warmer months.

The menu unfolds like a story of classic Creole flavors, with heartfelt favorites like gumbo yaya composed of andouille sausage, rotisserie chicken, and rice, as well as rich shrimp and crawfish étouffée over rice. Their jambalaya is overflowing with sausage and seafood, red beans and rice, and the po’ boy sandwiches showcase shrimp, crawfish, catfish, or hot sausage paired with crispy Cajun fries. There’s also a generous fried seafood platter and a fantastic Bourbon Street steak. Dessert is a big hit here as well, with bananas foster and rotating seasonal mousse selections.

Raphael and Jessica Jones may be new to owning a restaurant, but both bring years of hospitality experience. Raphael formerly managed Buddy’s Pizza, and Jessica rose through the ranks at Maru Sushi and Grill. They aimed to address a gap in Grand Rapids’ dining selections by introducing authentic Creole cuisine.

Garden District edges out SILVA and Gin Gin’s by offering a deeply rooted, executed‑right cuisine that doesn’t awkwardly adapt to Midwest expectations. Instead, it brings New Orleans home. It became the city’s standout “best new restaurant,” reflecting bold ambition and incredibly tasty food.
