Cannabis Sales Outpace Liquor, Dairy Sales in Michigan

MICHIGAN—It’s official: Michigan is the second-largest cannabis market in the country.

Whether you’re a regular toker who geeks out about the industry or simply one of the 2.3 million Michiganders who voted to legalize weed in 2018 and appreciates a good ol’ fashioned progress report, here are some interesting stats.

  • More than 600 pot shops across Michigan sold nearly $2.3 billion worth of marijuana in 2022. That’s more weed than every state except California. (For context, Michigan’s liquor sales were $1.94 billion in 2021. And the dairy industry—which for decades has been our state’s largest agricultural commodity—tracked $2.1 billion in sales in 2021.)
  • We’re still growing. More than $208 million in recreational weed sales happened in December 2022 alone: that’s a new monthly record for Michigan.
  • Since Michiganders voted to approve the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act in 2018, we’ve purchased $5.47 billion worth of weed since the law took effect, state records show.
  • The industry has brought more than 28,000 jobs to Michigan.
  • Weed is more affordable than ever: The average ounce of weed right now costs only about $90—or about $3 for a fat, one-gram joint.

  • Nearly 50% of cannabis shoppers in Michigan are millennials, with the same proportion of sales coming from men between the ages of 26-57. Michigan, however, also showed a slightly higher representation of women customers compared to other states, reports show.
  • A recent University of Michigan study shows that one in nine Michiganders used cannabis at least once in the last month.
