Our Michigan summer may be winding down, but there’s still time to hit a heat wave with your hottie. Here’s a list of local Michigan getaway faves, plus a few quick trip ideas that you might not have considered. Enjoy!
Cruise Through Life on Mackinac Island
Known for its legendary fudge, Mackinac Island is one of the most popular destinations in Michigan for a honeymoon, and it’s easy to see why. Without any cars allowed on the entire island, it’s hard not to slow down, relax, and take in the gorgeous Michigan scenery. And it’s not just for new love. AARP fans rated Mackinac Island as an amazing second honeymoon destination.
For quick romantic getaways, you can’t go wrong with the famous Grand Hotel. Reader’s Digest called the Grand Hotel the best last-minute travel destination in Michigan. If you’re planning on staying three nights, the Grand Hotel has its unparalleled Romance on Mackinac Package, which includes a one-hour private carriage tour plus fresh-cut flowers, a champagne basket, complimentary fudge, and more.
For a smaller-scale experience, Island House Hotel is closer to Mackinac’s downtown and harbor. It’s also incredibly popular as a romantic getaway hotel, and just as historic as the Grand Hotel. Their Romantic Getaway Package includes chilled sparkling wine, souvenir champagne flutes, and chocolate-covered strawberries from Ryba’s Fudge—all delivered directly to your room. Also included is dinner for two at the onsite 1852 Grill Room.
Another lodging option is Mission Point Resort and its inclusive Mackinac Romance Package. The two-night package includes food and beverage credit, ferry tickets, bike rentals, complimentary wine, and an artisan cheese tray on your first night. If traveling with your pooch in tow is important to you, Mission Point is a pet-friendly hotel.
There’s plenty on Mackinac for couples to do, like taking a tandem bike ride or a sunrise/sunset kayak paddle. Check out attractions like Arch Rock and Fort Mackinac. Or just soak up the Mackinac nightlife with a pub crawl in its quaint downtown.
Enjoy Wine Country in Traverse City, Leelanau Peninsula, and Old Mission Peninsula
Though it might be known as the Cherry Capital, the Traverse City area is also known for its romantic views, expansive wine regions, world-class restaurants, and plenty of romance to be discovered with your beloved.
Delamar offers one of the most romantic getaways in Traverse City. It’s located in the best of both worlds—on the beach, but also right downtown. Special packages include plenty of romance, with the Couples Escape package featuring a bottle of sparkling wine and cheese plate on arrival plus a complimentary late checkout.
If you’d like to get more involved, you can also choose the Elevated Tasting at Mari Vineyards Package for an exclusive wine tasting only for Delamar guests, or the Yoga Retreat Package for two classes per guest at Yen Yoga and Fitness.
If you truly need to get away from it all, you can choose the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Special packages include spa credits for the relaxation that your love needs. The Aerie Restaurant Lounge provides gorgeous views of the Grand Traverse Bay at any time of day.
You can also get closer to wine country, if you’d prefer. Chateau Chantal on the Old Mission Peninsula is one of Michigan’s most romantic bed and breakfasts. This cozy B&B may be rural, but it offers gorgeous views of nearby vineyards with decorated suites and elegant furnishings. Whether you prefer a six-course wine dinner or just some rosé with your pizza, there are plenty of unforgettable wine experiences here.
On the other side in Leelanau Peninsula, The Inn at Black Star Farms is lodging at one of Michigan’s top wineries. Each room purchase includes a bottle of house wine. Special packages include great date opportunities you’ll never forget, like a private sailboat ride for two, a guided winemaking tour, an in-depth cooking demo, bike and helmet rentals with a self-guided tour map of wine country, and much more.
Become a Knight in Shining Armor in Allegan
One of Michigan’s most romantic secrets is found in southwest Michigan, not too far from Kalamazoo. At Castle in the Country, you’ll find one of the most romantic summer getaways Michigan has to offer. This castle-themed four-star bed and breakfast is ready to give you and your sweetheart the “royal treatment.”
Castle in the Country has been remodeled from a Victorian mansion nicknamed “The Castle.” Rooms include fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, and gorgeous views of the Michigan countryside. Castle in the Country is so popular among lovebirds that they’ve curated packages just to propose. You can choose romantic locales like a pondside picnic, out on a boat, or out in the vineyard.
You can also upgrade your romantic experience with other packages and enhancements. Include a wine tasting in a temperature-controlled igloo, a couple’s massage, in-room breakfast trays, and more. You can explore the 65-acre wooded property on fat-tire bikes, or get out and explore all Allegan has to offer.
Get Lakeside Vintage in the Petoskey Area
Love often involves big rocks—but in Michigan, those big rocks might just be Petoskey stones. And you can go hunt for them together, hand-in-hand, in the lakeside paradise of Petoskey.
One of the best romantic getaway hotels in the Petoskey area is nearby at the Inn at Bay Harbor. You can get those perfect Michigan lakeside views from this Marriott hotel, which includes its own lakeside cabana bar, a year-round hot tub with lake views, along with private and romantic poolside cabanas. You and your beloved can relax on two padded chaise loungers, order food and drinks at your leisure, and relax poolside.
The Romance Package includes not only breakfast for two but also a nightly cordial with two roses as well as bottles of red wine or sparkling wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, and hand-crafted charcuterie.
Other optional additions to your getaway include spa services, where you can even get a Petoskey hot stone massage. You’ll delight at the large lawn games like giant chess, and can even go on a private four-hour excursion on a yacht on Lake Michigan.
Go Avante-Garde in Detroit’s Woodward District
The Shinola Hotel isn’t your average hotel—it calls itself “Detroit’s new living room” and boy, is there some cool stuff in that living room. This bright red building in the heart of Detroit has walls that are filled with art for an aesthetic experience like no other. And much like those art pieces, every room in the Shinola hotel looks a little different when you see it from a new perspective.
Shinola is a watch brand, and much like a gorgeous watch, a stay at the hotel makes a great gift for your sweetheart. The eight-story boutique hotel has 129 rooms that include minibars stocked with Detroit brands and advanced tech like Bluetooth speakers, Chromecast, and Wi-Fi that will make any phone addict happy.
Though the Shinola Hotel doesn’t really have any romantic packages, there’s plenty of unique opportunities for romance. Parker’s Alley is a retail and dining destination packed with entrepreneurs, all within the same city block. You’ll love the artisan chocolates at Bon Bon Bon, the jewelry at Rebel Nell, and the exclusive cocktail bar feel of Evening Bar.
Detroit as a whole also has plenty of romantic things to do, like checking out local art or getting cozy with nature at Belle Isle.
Cozy Up to History in Oscoda
The Historic Webster House is a historic bed and breakfast that, in the eighteenth century, was the lavish home of a local judge. Today, the bed and breakfast has seven unique rooms that are perfect for a romantic getaway.
Its most unique room is called “The Keep.” This is a five-room suite that makes up the entire lower level. The walls are made of stone and brick, making it feel less like a basement suite and more like a cozy fantasy getaway. There’s also the third-floor Webster Room, which the Webster House staff calls the “most majestic” and perfect for couples. The Asian-inspired Miss Yunji Room on the second floor is another option, with an electric fireplace and gorgeous stained-glass window painted by a local artist.
To any room purchase, you can add the Romantic Escape package, which includes a bottle of wine or champagne along with Belgian truffles and a seasonal professionally arranged bouquet of flowers. With the Honey Boomer package, you can also add on one- or two-hour massages. Maximize the romance with the Ultimate in Luxury Package, including a romantic dinner for two and unlimited use of the spa and sauna room.

The Amway Grand Plaza is a 29-story glass tower that has called the shores of the Grand River home for nearly a century. You and your sweetie can relax in plush comfort with luxurious bedding and urban designs with historic charm. And many rooms offer high-rise panoramic views of the city that are bound to impress.
For maximum romance, you can access the Celebration Package, which includes a complimentary bottle of wine, gift card for hotel dining, gift shop coupon, and late checkout. The hotel also has skybridge access to the Van Andel Arena, so you can get quality entertainment without having to step outside. Amway Grand Plaza is situated right in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, meaning you’re within walking distance of some of the best Grand Rapids has to offer in terms of recreation, nightlife, and more.
Get Back to Nature on Beaver Island
Okay, so you need to get away from it all—but like, really get away. Then you’ll want to check out the largest island in Lake Michigan, Beaver Island. Sometimes called America’s Emerald Isle, this is the infamous island that once had its own king. Unlike Mackinac Island, you can either bring over your car by ferry or rent a car on the island.
One of the most romantic places to stay on Beaver Island is the charmingly simple Beaver Island Lodge. The lodge was originally a one-story hunting and fishing lodge, but today, has expanded into a getaway destination. There are 14 guest rooms and suites over three floors, all individually decorated. Nearly all of the rooms are specifically intended for only two adults, making it perfect for couples, and children under 6 are not allowed. There is also the Sunset Cabin, a two-bedroom cabin with a full kitchen, which is the only place you may spot young children.
One of the most romantic attractions of the Beaver Island Lodge is the Sunset Restaurant’s outdoor dining on Lake Michigan. You and your beloved can enjoy French cuisine favorites while watching the sunset over the water.
There’s plenty of remote romance to be enjoyed on Beaver Island. Don’t forget to head down to the beach to stargaze. See if you can catch the Northern Lights.
Revisit a Nostalgic Past in Marquette
Nearly a century ago, the Northland Hotel in downtown Marquette played host to famous figures such as Amelia Earhart and Abbott and Costello. Today, the hotel is still going strong with a new identity as the Landmark Inn, but with all the romance and nostalgia of its heyday.
