Ah, Pi Day: the one day every year that brings together dessert enthusiasts and math fanatics in equal measure.
The best part? You don’t even need a rudimentary understanding of math to appreciate March 14 (or 3/14, in honor of 3.14, the first three digits of Pi). That’s because the only math required to celebrate this “holiday” comes down to basic counting: How many slices of pie can you reasonably consume in a 24-hour period?
Luckily for those who call Metro Detroit home, there are countless ways to mark Pi Day by snagging a few slices of—you guessed it—delicious pie. Whether you’re a fan of classic flavors like apple and cherry or eager to sample something new, our collection of pie-centric destinations will keep your taste buds tingling on March 14 and beyond.
Without further ado, we present our mouthwatering Detroit Pie Trail, just in time for Pi Day.
Sister Pie
8066 Kercheval Dr., Detroit
If you’re a pie-lover in the Motor City, you’ve almost certainly indulged in a few slices from Sister Pie—and it’s easy to see why. This West Village bakery offers plenty of pies, of course, but also serves delicious cookies, muffins, other baked goods, and heartier fare prepared with locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. On Pi Day, try their salted maple or malted lime varieties for a departure from traditional pie flavors. Head to the Sister Pie website for details.

Sweet Potato Sensations
17337 Lahser Rd., Detroit
Sweet potato pie is an undeniable comfort food, and Sweet Potato Sensations in Detroit does it best. There’s ample traditional sweet potato pie to be found here, yes—but you’ll also unearth flavors like sweet potato coconut and sweet potato pecan. There’s even sweet potato cheesecake for those who prefer a more dense dessert. To check out their daily selections or place a pie pre-order, visit the Sweet Potato Sensations website.
Achatz Handmade Pie Company
Multiple locations
Pie fanatics will be pleased to know that Achatz operates locations in Armada, Shelby, Chesterfield, Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Beverly Hills, Oxford and Madison Heights. This means that no matter where you are in Metro Detroit, you’re never too far from a mouthwatering slice of Achatz’s beloved handmade pie. The flavors are fantastic: keep it classic with Dutch apple or chocolate cream, mix things up with cannoli cream, or select a sugar-free pie sweetened with fruit juice. Details can be found on the Achatz Pie website.
Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery
25137 Plymouth Rd., Redford Charter Twp.
While we’re partial to the sugary sort, some folks prefer to enjoy pie crust filled with meat, potatoes, herbs, and other fixings. If you’re a savory pie connoisseur, check out Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery in Redford Charter Township. Since 1949, hungry visitors have flocked here to enjoy traditional Scottish meat pies, cheese and onion pies, chicken curry pies, and more. There’s even a macaroni and cheese pie on the menu for adventurous diners. Find out more at the Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery website.

Lush Yummies Pie Company
23225 Woodward Ave, Ferndale
Detroit native Jennifer Lyle started Lush Yummies with inspiration from her grandfather, who taught her to make Lemon “Butta” pies when Jennifer was young. Today, she operates her very own bakery out of a production facility in Eastern Market and a storefront in Ferndale. We recommend ordering ahead to secure your succulent Lemon Butta pie (via local pickup). Check out the Lush Yummies website for all the details.

Culinary Combo Bakery
29260 Franklin Rd., Southfield
Culinary Combo, tucked away in Southfield, is something of a hidden gem that’s so worth visiting during your Pi Day celebrations. This airy bakery serves up all sorts of perfectly prepared pies, from peanut butter mousse to banana cream. If you’ve got dietary restrictions, you’ll be glad to learn that Culinary Combo can make many of its pie flavors gluten-free. Check out the full menu at the Culinary Combo website.
Pie Sci Pizza
5163 Trumbull, Detroit, and 8150 W Nine Mile Rd, Oak Park
Yes, pizza pie counts as pie! On Pi Day, we encourage you to enjoy pie in all its beautifully delicious forms, and this includes a few slices of ‘za. While incredible Detroit-style pizza can be found throughout the city, Pie Sci’s two locations offer a unique twist on all things pizza with menus of humorously named selections. Dig into the Jimmy Pesto, which includes mozzarella, red onion, mushrooms, walnut and basil pesto, chicken, and ranch drizzle, or try The Pear Necessities, which is served topped with spinach, mozzarella, garlic oil, bacon, feta, honey drizzle and pears—yes, pears! All the tasty details can be found on Pie Sci’s website.
