9 quick hits of cannabis news from across Michigan

MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.

Here are nine things you need to know this week:

ROCK BOTTOM: Michigan’s recreational marijuana prices hit a new all-time low last month, with the average ounce selling for only $74 during the month of October, according to state reports. That’s down more than 400% from an average price of $400 tracked in October 2020. The steep drop in prices is reportedly expected to put further pressure on local dispensaries competing with an oversaturated market, but industry leaders say a turnaround is imminent

TIGHT TIMES: Among the companies struggling to stay on top of the market: Fluresh, which is reportedly set to close a large cannabis production facility in Adrian, lay off at least 46 employees, and shift its Michigan production over to its main facility in Grand Rapids.

TOO HIGH: Cops across the country—including in Michigan—are reportedly using old (and imperfect) tactics to decide who is legally too high to drive. That includes the same roadside tests used to decide whether a driver is drunk, except without the precision of a breath test.

BUSTED: A Dearborn man was reportedly caught driving around with more than nine pounds of weed this month during a special, federally funded traffic detail in New York. He faces a felony charge for allegedly possessing (way) more than the legal New York state limit of 3 ounces.

LOCAL GEM: The Hive, a woman-owned dispensary in Hazel Park, is making headlines for competing in a market dominated by men, corporate retailers, and growers—and selling some of the freshest, most pungent, and well-grown marijuana in the state of Michigan.

CELEBRITY BUZZ: HYMAN Cannabis is teaming up with legendary golfer and cultural icon John Daly for an exclusive new product line coming soon to Michigan dispensaries. The “Fairway Runtz” collection will include joints, disposable vapes, gummies, hash rosin, and more.

AD BAN: The City of Detroit is reportedly advancing a new ordinance that prohibits advertisements for marijuana and e-cigarettes within 1,000 feet of “sensitive” locations like child care centers, schools, libraries, and parks. The new law could take effect as soon as this year.

BEST BUDS: Leafly recently asked more than 900 budtenders to select the best weed strain and brand in their state. In Michigan, the big winners were Candy Cake and Grown Rogue.

NEW IN TOWN: Vive Cannabis opened a new dispensary at the long-abandoned Packard Plant in Detroit last month, where it reportedly boasts some of the cheapest weed prices in the state.
