Kalamazoo County has approved an 80-unit family shelter as student homelessness soars. Here’s what we know so far.

Responding to an alarming surge in family homelessness, Kalamazoo County has approved plans to convert a former Country Inn & Suites into a transitional shelter, offering hope to hundreds of struggling families. The 80-unit facility, set to open in mid-2025, will provide both immediate housing and comprehensive support services for families working to rebuild their lives.

Sharp Rise in Student Homelessness Drives Action

Recent statistics paint a troubling picture of family housing insecurity in the region. Over 1,700 students are currently experiencing homelessness in Kalamazoo County—a dramatic 30% increase from 2023. The crisis is particularly acute in certain school districts, with Portage Public Schools reporting an 82% rise in student homelessness and Comstock Public Schools facing an even more severe 97% increase.
