7 quick hits of cannabis news from across Michigan

MICHIGAN—The grinder of Michigan cannabis news is full.

We picked out the seeds and stems:

TREE TOWN TOPS: Ann Arbor has once again been crowned one of America’s most cannabis-friendly cities, namely for its deep stash of dispensaries and relaxed local vibes.

BORDER BLOWBACK: Officials in Niles Township, among other local Michigan communities that have banned cannabis businesses, are reportedly bracing for lawsuits from dozens of would-be dispensaries after voters recently slammed the door on the local marijuana market.

EXPORTED GOODS: State lawmakers are reportedly kicking around plans to let Michigan’s cannabis companies ship certain products to other states, at least until a federal loophole closes next year. Many Michigan-made gummies and drinks may already qualify for out-of-state sales.

PUFF PROBLEMS: PUFF Cannabis is reportedly suing the city of Menominee for at least $20 million in damages, claiming that officials green-lit its business license last December but then slow-rolled inspections and refused to issue an occupancy permit over parking-lot nitpicks.

BUCKEYE BUZZKILL: Ohio lawmakers are considering legislation that would bar Ohioans from using or possessing any cannabis that wasn’t grown, tested, and sold inside Ohio’s own system. If enforced, the law could have serious implications for border town pot shops in Michigan.

SCHOOL RULES: Dispensaries are no longer required to be 1,000 feet from school zones in Ann Arbor, clearing the way for even more shops in a city that’s already swimming in them. Council members reportedly said the old rule boxed out businesses with no real safety benefit.

LETTUCE LOSES: A Benzie County judge has officially ordered Lettuce Cannabis Co. in Benzonia Township to shut down, denying the shop’s request to stay open while it appeals. The legal battle reportedly stems from a dispute over zoning. The ruling is set to be appealed.
