Opinion: I want to be a fresh voice for Greater Holland. That’s why I’m running for office

Abby Klomparens, a candidate for Michigan House District 86, shares how she’s bringing her commitment to community and public service to her campaign.

For as long as I can remember, my life has been centered around two things: politics and community. Growing up in our West Michigan household, my parents — Wayne and Rhonda Klomparens — were both heavily involved in the City of Holland.

Both taught at Holland Public Schools for over 30 years. When it comes to my father, he also served as a Holland City Council member. During his time in local politics, he worked alongside State Rep. Nancy DeBoer, which is one of the many reasons why I thought I would be the perfect candidate to challenge her in this year’s upcoming election.

My family’s story in Holland stretches back to 1847, when they arrived seeking opportunity and freedom. For generations, Holland has been more than a home; it is a vibrant tapestry woven with diversity, innovation, and endless possibilities.

Growing up, conversations around the dinner table, guided by my father’s service on the City Council, instilled in me a profound sense of duty to community and the transformative power of public service.

I believe I can be a fresh voice in Lansing for the Greater Holland area. History shows that for the longest time, Michigan’s 86th District has been right-leaning conservative. However, I am here to say that times are changing. Greater Holland needs more leadership and representation.

As someone deeply rooted in the rich history of Greater Holland, I am honored to have this opportunity. My journey here is more than a personal ambition; it is a continuation of a legacy of service and a dedication to advancing our great community.

I am running because Greater Holland deserves a new voice in Lansing—someone with a fresh perspective and an unwavering commitment to advancing the issues that matter most to our families. Our community is not just growing; it is evolving. It is essential that our representation reflects this dynamism and advocates for policies that ensure safe neighborhoods, robust municipal services, and outstanding public schools that prepare our children for tomorrow’s challenges.

One of my top priorities is safeguarding our Great Lakes, our region’s lifeblood, for generations to come. As we navigate environmental challenges and opportunities, I will champion policies that preserve and protect these invaluable resources.

My engagement in community service and advocacy has shaped my understanding of the issues facing our district. From serving on the Macatawa Transportation Authority Board to contributing to the Holland Human Relations Commission, every role has strengthened my resolve to be a proactive advocate for progress. Additionally, my experience as a legislative aide and as the West Michigan Regional Coordinator for Senator Gary Peters has equipped me with the skills and relationships necessary to navigate Lansing effectively.

I am committed to advancing future-forward, inclusive policies that address our community’s needs comprehensively. Whether it’s advocating for sustainable economic growth, improving access to healthcare, or promoting equity and justice, I am dedicated to being a responsive and accessible representative for all residents of District 86.

Holland is not just my past; it is my present and future. I am ready to bring a fresh voice and a steadfast dedication to public service to Lansing. Together, we can ensure that Greater Holland continues to thrive as a beacon of opportunity and community spirit.
