Michiganders know a thing or two about quality cannabis—so we asked thousands of them to share their all-time favorite dispensaries. Here’s what they told us.
MICHIGAN—The latest state regulatory reports show there are more than 800 recreational marijuana dispensaries across Michigan. But let’s be blunt: Some are simply better than others.
And finding the perfect pot shop to spend your hard-earned cash can be a real challenge—especially when the average ounce of weed is selling for less than $80, and dozens of retailers are offering even more insane discounts to lure in new, first-time shoppers.
Luckily, readers of The MichiGanja Report have done the legwork for you.
Over the last several weeks, hundreds of readers recommended their favorite dispensaries from every corner of the state. The following list, compiled in alphabetical order, features the 11 top cannabis shops most frequently cited as being the best dispensaries in Michigan.
Ascend Cannabis
One of Michigan’s most highly recommended pot shops is also among its most prolific retailers. Ascend Cannabis now operates eight dispensaries across the state—including one in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Detroit, East Lansing, and Morenci, and three more in Grand Rapids.
Plainly put, these dispensaries are known for their lower-than-average prices and better-than-average weed. Each Ascend store is specifically built to offer a diverse selection of the highest quality cannabis products to meet individual preferences and needs, and its budtenders are usually straightforward and informative in guiding customers along the way.
And while the company operates in six other states, each store likes to keep things in the community—namely by filling their menu with a wide roster of locally sourced cannabis goodies.
Pro Tip: Check out the free delivery options or order online for a super-speedy pick up.
Cookies
Cookies is a cannabis brand from California that was founded in 2010 by Billboard-charting rapper Berner and renowned Bay Area cannabis cultivator Jai. The company is known for its game-changing weed genetics and award winning collection of over 70 proprietary strains.
Over the last several years, Cookies has quickly emerged as a household name in the weed world—with more than 70 retail locations in over 20 different markets across six countries, including six stores in Michigan, including in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Jackson, and Grand Rapids.
Beyond selling potent cannabis products, Cookies’ distinctive blue logo and streetwear line have also made the brand a bit of a cultural icon by blending cannabis with fashion and lifestyle.
Berner’s ultimate vision for Cookies also extends beyond selling weed. The company also cares about the communities they serve—including initiatives that provide support for communities disproportionately affected by marijuana prohibition, as well as for social equity programs that help new cannabis entrepreneurs in underrepresented areas get a start in the cannabis industry.
Dunegrass Co.
For the second year in a row, The MichiGanja Report readers are crowning Dunegrass Co. as the King in the North and—by a rather wide margin—their all-time favorite dispensary.
This cannabis company was founded by lifetime residents of Northern Michigan and now operates eight locations in Beulah, Big Rapids, Cadillac, Gaylord, Manistee, Marquette, and Traverse City. Beyond just selling weed, Dunegrass Co. strives to be your “cannabis outfitter.”
According to its website, Dunegrass focuses heavily on regional partnerships to supply locally sourced products that support local communities—and growers—across Northern Michigan.
The company also works to reduce the lingering stigma surrounding cannabis use by routinely partnering with community leaders, tourism associations, and local vacation rental operators—all to “build an infrastructure of acceptance and normalization” of weed.
Pro Tip: Be sure to check out the company’s Responsible Cannabis Guide.
High Society
High Society was founded in 2020 by a group of people who wanted to elevate the cannabis shopping experience in Michigan—namely offering steep discounts and great customer service. And this year, it stood out as a clear favorite among readers of The MichiGanja Report.
The company now operates seven locations in Michigan, including stores in Big Rapids, Birch Run, Charlotte, East Lansing, Lenox, Mount Pleasant, and Saline. According to the company website, budtenders there know how to ask the right questions to find the “perfect” cannabis product for every customer. High Society also prides itself in having an expansive network of vendors, which allows it to maintain one of the largest product selections on the market.
House of Dank
House of Dank has earned a reputation as one of Michigan’s premier cannabis retailers—and it’s also one of the state’s fastest growing brands, with stores in Ann Arbor, Center Line, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Lapeer, Monroe, Saginaw, Traverse City, and Ypsilanti.
Notably, House of Dank was the first retailer to begin selling recreational weed in Detroit. And over the last several years, the company has also gained attention for its world-class selection of cannabis products, as well as its commitment to convenient and affordable shopping.
In addition to its in-store selection, the company also offers delivery, curbside, and drive-thru pick-up options. And its in-store loyalty program also provides Michiganders with exclusive discounts and VIP access to special events—like the High Times Cannabis Cup competition.
House of Dank is also known for supporting local communities across Michigan, namely by hosting fun pop-up events, in addition to getting them high. The company also formed a recent partnership with Baker College to offer students hands-on experience in the cannabis industry.
Pro Tip: Beyond High Times and Zalympix judging kits, House of Dank is also known for selling a variety of other limited, special edition products—including Pressure Pack Pheno Hunt boxes.
JARS Cannabis
If you haven’t spotted a JARS dispensary somewhere in your city, it’s probably because your locally elected leaders have decided not to allow for recreational cannabis sales in your area.
This company now operates a whopping 23 dispensaries across the state of Michigan, including Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Center Line, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Hazel Park, Lansing, Monroe, Mount Clemens, Mount Pleasant, Muskegon, New Baltimore, New Buffalo; Owosso, Oxford, Port Huron, River Rouge, Riverview, Saginaw, Saugatuck, and Wayland.
And for the second year in a row, The MichiGanja Report readers named JARS as top favorite.
With additional stores in Arizona and Colorado, JARS prides itself in offering one of the widest varieties of some of the nation’s best cannabis products—all at prices that people can afford.
Don’t have a JARS store nearby? Don’t worry. They’re probably coming soon. More stores are currently under construction in Caspian, Jackson, Madison Heights, Milan, and Okemos.
Pro Tip: Never pay full price. There are always promotions and discounts available at JARS.
King of Budz
King of Budz started out as a single medical marijuana dispensary in Detroit and has since expanded to four recreational dispensaries in Detroit, Ferndale, Monroe, and New Buffalo. A fifth Michigan location is reportedly opening soon on Groesbeck Highway in Roseville.
The company is known for carrying some of the most sought-after brands on the market—including Local Grove, Ghostbudsters, Michigrown, Empire, and many more. And with a constantly rotating deli-style selection of weed at each location, The MichiGanja Report readers seem to think they have a menu that stands out from other dispensaries in Michigan.
Lume
Lume is easily the most recognizable cannabis company in Michigan, with 38 dispensaries statewide and an enormous range of in-house flower strains, edibles, concentrates, vaporizers, topicals, and tinctures that are all exclusively sold only at Lume dispensaries.
Because Lume operates every aspect of the cultivation, processing, packaging, and sales process, the company has been able to cut out the middleman to ensure its products remain affordable, as well as live up to the high standards of The MichiGanja Report readers.
Pro Tip: Shell out a few extra bucks for Lume’s Gold Label products. They’re worth it.
Pincanna
Pincanna gets its name from its massive, 135,000-square-foot growing facility and new “superstore” dispensary in Pinconning. It also processes a few in-house brands of edibles, as well as operates three other retail locations in East Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Kalkaska.
The Pincanna portfolio now includes 11 distinct brands of cannabis products designed for just about every smoker (or vaper) in Michigan—from super cheap, $99 ounces of small buds for bargain shoppers to premium, $30 lighters for those who want something with an extra punch.
Through a partnership with Funky Extracts, the shelves are also lined with lots of edibles.
Pro Tip: Pincanna has been churning out some of its prettiest weed under its Head Stash Harvest brand, which features only large, dense, and trichome-covered buds of top-tier strains.
PUFF Cannabis
PUFF Cannabis was founded in 2019, is headquartered in Troy, and now operates 10 dispensaries (and counting) across Michigan—including in Bay City, Center Line, Hamtramck, Kalamazoo, Madison Heights, Monroe, Oscoda, River Rouge, Sturgis, and Traverse City.
A large network of vendors has helped this company gain a reputation for a wide selection of high-quality cannabis products, ranging from flower and pre-rolls to edibles and concentrates. Budtenders there are also known to create a welcoming environment in each of the stores.
PUFF Cannabis also stands out for its commitment to community engagement and environmental responsibility—like providing hundreds of turkeys to families in need during the holidays and designing an environmentally sustainable building for its headquarters in Troy.
Quality Roots
Quality Roots was founded by Aric Klar, whose family reportedly owned one of Michigan’s largest independent pharmacy operations and taught him all the ins and outs of pain management, team management, and how to build a supply chain in a tightly regulated industry.
The company opened its first dispensary in Battle Creek in 2020 and has since emerged as a major player in Michigan’s cannabis industry with additional retail locations now open in Berkeley, Corunna, Detroit, Madison Heights, Monroe, Waterford, and Ypsilanti.
Each dispensary is known for offering a diverse range of cannabis products, including flower, edibles, concentrates, and vape cartridges—all carefully curated to meet the highest standards.
