If you feel the urge to deep clean your entire house and purge all of the excess clutter, you might be trying to find where to donate your used household items. We’ve done the hard work for you by compiling a list of organizations around Michigan to donate clothes, shoes, and household items.
1. Alternatives for Girls – Detroit
Alternatives for Girls provides shelter, mentorship, and educational resources to young women in the Detroit area. The nonprofit relies on the support from the community to continue offering its programming. The organization accepts used and new items, and you can find a list of their most needed items on their website.
What They Accept: Warm women’s clothing; kids’ and adult boots; women’s undergarments; baby clothing; hair care products; bags and backpacks; houseware items
2. House by the Side of the Road – Ann Arbor
In 2020, House by the Side of the Road celebrated its 50th year, and the organization is still going strong. All items are free to those in need, who can acquire anything from clothing, linens, books, and household items. Many individuals who use the House are domestic violence survivors, job loss, fire, or illness. The organization also accepts monetary donations.
What They Accept: Bedding; books; clothing for adults, children, and toddles; household items; shoes; toys
3. Dress for Success – Ypsilanti
Dress for Success provides gently used professional attire to women in the Ann Arbor community who are hoping to achieve economic independence. The organization offers networking support, professional attire, and developmental tools to help women thrive at work. By donating your gently used women’s professional attire to Dress for Success, you’re helping women in their search for financial independence and autonomy.
What They Accept: Women’s professional clothing and shoes; jewelry; handbags and briefcases
4. The Ann Arbor Thrift Shop – Ann Arbor
The Ann Arbor Thrift Shop is a volunteer nonprofit supported by the community, and the shop itself has been in business since 1932. The thrift shop’s purchases support emergency assistance in Washtenaw County, and they accept a wide variety of materials.
