Free Weed and a New Bud and Breakfast: Cannabis News From Across Michigan
Michigan is well on its way to becoming the nation’s weed capital—sorry, West Coasters. And even if you don’t partake, the sheer enormity of the market (and the economic impact) is hard to ignore.
That’s why we’re starting this occasional column of canna news and information from around the state.
Here are five things you need to know. PS: If you’re interested in getting this in your inbox, sign up for The MichiGanja Report, a free newsletter dedicated to covering marijuana in Michigan.
Skymint Gives Away Free Weed: There’s so much weed in Michigan that one company is giving it away—literally. Skymint, the state’s largest licensed cannabis operation, recently held a “Free Weed for a Year” sweepstakes. One lucky smoker scored a $500 monthly credit to spend at any of Skymint’s 24 Michigan locations. Another 24 people each won 10-gram joints. Keep your eye out for more from Skymint.
Empty Nesters Open ‘Bud and Breakfast’ in Muskegon: One Muskegon couple hopes to cash in on Michigan’s cannabis craze by turning their home into a 420-friendly bed and breakfast—er, “Bud and Breakfast.” For $195 a night, guests get a 420-friendly room (complete with paraphernalia) and options like local pot shop tours.
New in Lowell: Exclusive Brands opened its sixth retail location in Michigan last week, in Lowell. The 3,600-square-foot store is at 2384 W. Main St. The company also plans to open stores this year in Monroe, Gaylord, Oxford, Lapeer and Saline.
State Workers Still Face Drug Tests: Even though marijuana is legal for recreational use in Michigan, all potential state employees must pass a drug test that includes pot. That’s caused some hiring challenges, reports the Detroit Free Press. In 2022, the state rejected 151 job applicants who had already received conditional employment offers after they tested positive for marijuana.
Pot for Pain: Three in 10 adults with chronic pain are now turning to medical weed instead of prescription opioids—at least according to a new study from the University of Michigan.
