MICHIGAN — Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan, and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.
Here are six things you need to know this week:
GROWING THE ECONOMY: Another month of record-breaking cannabis sales in Michigan—$276 million in July—now puts the industry on pace to sell more than $3.3 billion worth of weed over the next year, surpassing estimates perceived as ambitious back in 2020.
RACE TO THE BOTTOM: Despite record sales, many dispensaries across Michigan are still reportedly struggling to churn a profit—with some insiders calling it a “race to the bottom” as prices continue to decline and more cannabis cultivation operations continue to go online.
ALL FUN AND GAMES: While Michigan’s recreational pot industry expands, the medical side of the market is wilting. Medical sales are now reportedly down by 71% over the last year to just $6 million last month—marking the lowest sales since medical weed was first legalized in 2008.
MICHIGAN ANNIVERSARY: Stiiizy is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Michigan on Saturday, Aug. 26, at its first dispensary in Ferndale, 624 E. Nine Mile Rd. Stop by anytime from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a chance to win prizes, get some free food, and score some big discounts.
GOOD CHARLOTTE: The city of Charlotte advanced plans this week to eventually allow pot shops to open within the city limits. The City Council recently voted on a series of new district maps where dispensaries would be allowed, and again heard from the public on Monday.
CANNABIS COMEDY: A free outdoor comedy show this weekend in Muskegon is set to offer guests a chance to smoke weed while laughing it up to four different comedians. The “Canna-Comedy Bash” begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, at The Bowl, next to IndiGrow.
