But where to go for that trim or radical new look? If you’re in the Detroit or Lansing areas, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from—including some of the best locally owned independent barber shops in the country. Here’s a look at 10 locally owned barbershops in Detroit and Lansing (with one in Ferndale for good measure).

Since 2002, this Lansing barbershop has offered a full range of services for customers of all ages. With a five-star rating on Yelp, Barber Love accepts walk-ins as well as pre-arranged bookings, and with UM and MSU pennants on the walls, all sides of Michigan’s biggest rivalry are welcome.

Barber Station

2601 Gratiot Ave., Detroit

This state-licensed barbershop is not only a veteran-owned local favorite, it’s also a community gathering place—they even host a game station where customers can challenge each other to a friendly game of chess while they wait. Barber Station is proud to be family-friendly, offering services for customers of all ages and genders.

With seven locations in and around Detroit, the Detroit Barber Co. is an award-winning chain of local barbershops operating and expanding since 2015—with an in-house line of hair care, beard care, and shaving products available for purchase. As a traditional barbershop, they offer a variety of men’s hairstyles as well as beard maintenance and shaving, which can all be viewed on their website.

Eastside Barber Shop

521 E. Cesar E. Chavez Ave., Lansing

Voted one of Lansing’s best barbershops by local news sources—winning the top spot for four years running—Eastside Barbershop is a woman-owned, independent barbershop operating in Lansing since 2018. They offer a full range of grooming services by appointment only, so be sure to book in advance.

Tradition is the name of the game at this old-school barbershop in Old Town Lansing. They offer haircuts, beard trimming, and old-fashioned straight-razor shaves in a laid-back atmosphere complete with vintage decor and black velvet paintings on the walls. While they book by appointment only during the week, they do accept weekend walk-ins, so come on down.

Master Dorian’s Barbershop

7000 Michigan Ave., Detroit

For a laid-back barbershop that aims to feel like “your second home” while still offering top-of-the-line services, look no further than Master Dorian’s. The self-described “celebrity barber” of Detroit has cut the hair of a variety of professional athletes from the NFL to MLB, so sports fans should keep their eyes open when they come in for a cut—you never know who you’ll run into.

Standard Barber Company

Now with a new location, this barbershop was a pioneer in the “hipster” barber trend when it first opened in Cadillac Square back in 2014. With regular brand partnerships and promotions, Standard Barber Co. is a great place not only to get a haircut or a trim but to discover some great new grooming products.

The Bearded Lady

1701 Trumbull Ave., Suite A, Detroit

Who says barbershops are only for men? Certainly not The Bearded Lady, which offers services to customers of all genders, charging for cuts and styles by length rather than the gender of the person getting a trim. If you’re feeling less than fluffy after your cut, visit with the friendly shop dog

The Social Club Grooming Co.

Founded as a modern take on the traditional barbershop with the idea of serving as a community social hub as well as a place for grooming services, The Social Club Grooming Co. is a barbershop with a message of inclusivity. They have implemented the traditional Black barbershop culture to become a “third place,” or as they put it, “a place of lively debate, raucous comedy and authentic, often lifelong friendships,” for customers of all backgrounds. With two Detroit locations, The Social Club is planning to expand nationally while keeping pride in its Detroit roots.

Union Barber

212 W. Nine Mile Road, Ferndale

“Hot shaves and good times” are the order of the day at Union Barbershop. This old-school barbershop, with two locations just outside Detroit, offers services for customers of all genders while keeping a classic men’s barbershop aesthetic. And they’re always busy—just check out their time-lapse TikTok videos to see what we mean.
