Slotkin wants Michiganders to help decide how the government spends money on the military

US Rep. Elissa Slotkin wants Michiganders to have a bigger say in how the federal government spends money on national security. Here’s how you can weigh in.

MICHIGAN—Every year, federal lawmakers work on a critical piece of legislation that sets the recommended funding levels and policies for the US Department of Defense and State, including the military, the intelligence community, and broader national security programs.

It’s called the National Defense Authorization Act.

And this year, with US Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) serving on the House Armed Service Committee, Michiganders could have a bigger role in determining what’s included in the bill.

For the next month, Slotkin’s office is accepting online suggestions from Michiganders to ensure they “have a voice on the final product” and ensure the legislation “works for Michigan.”

In addition to supporting the military, the National Defense Authorization Act also provides federal funding and resources to help support spouses and families of service members.

Slotkin said she has worked to secure several important provisions in the law in previous years—including expanding PFAS testing for military sites in Michigan; ensuring domestic supplies of pharmaceuticals; boosting funding to US military bases; and providing funds to advance the research, development, and testing of “new and emerging” military technologies.
