Whether you want to make a good first impression with your latest Bumble match or surprise your spouse with an exciting evening out, Detroit is full of unique date night opportunities.

There’s no denying Detroit is a romantic city with its scenic riverfront, art deco architecture, and plethora of fine dining options. But even in a city as charming as Detroit, it can be easy to fall into a date night rut.

If you’re looking to diversify your date nights beyond dinner and a movie, you’re in the right place. From circus school and indoor skydiving to cocktail making classes and piano karaoke, we’ve rounded up the most unique date night activities in Detroit.

Axe throwing at Detroit Axe

Multiple locations

Treat your date to an axe-citing night they won’t soon forget. Book a board at Detroit Axe and try your hand at axe throwing for an adventurous evening. Trying something new together is a great way to bond with someone, or, if you’re an axe throwing pro, this is a good opportunity to impress your date with your skills.

Detroit Axe has three locations: Partridge Creek, Ferndale, and Corktown, and the latter two serve a variety of food and drinks. The Corktown outpost is located within The Yard, an entertainment center with tons of indoor and outdoor activities, including cornhole, shuffleboard, and pinball. If axe throwing ends up not being your date’s cup of tea, you’ll have plenty of other more traditional games to fall back on.

Craft cocktail class at Valentine Distilling Co.

965 Wanda St., Ferndale

Meeting for drinks is a fine date night activity, but learning to make the beverages before imbibing will make the evening extra special. During one of Valentine Distilling’s cocktail classes, you’ll learn to craft two cocktails and discover techniques that’ll help you elevate your home bartending game. In addition to the instruction, you’ll get to enjoy your creations and take home a souvenir Valentine Distilling Co. copper measuring jigger and recipe cards so you can recreate the drinks at home.

Paddle-to-table dinner at Coriander Kitchen and Farm

14601 Riverside Blvd.

Sure, you could take a date to Coriander Kitchen and Farm, a farm-to-table eatery in Detroit’s Canal District, and have a perfectly lovely time. But since this is a post about unique date ideas, we’re going to suggest you take the more adventurous route and book a Paddle to Table tour with Detroit River Sports. During the tour, you’ll kayak through the canals of Jefferson Chalmers and spend some time on the open water of the Detroit River before landing at Coriander Kitchen and Farm for dinner.

The eclectic and casual space is romantic without feeling stuffy and features an ever-evolving menu that highlights local produce and meat from nearby family farms.

Staycation at The Siren Hotel

1509 Broadway St.

With so much to do at The Siren Hotel, you can easily keep your companion entertained for hours. Start with drinks at Candy Bar, a glamorous, vintage-inspired space serving up nostalgic cocktails. Then, head to Sid Gold’s Request Room to serenade your date with a piano karaoke performance. Drinks are also served at Sid’s, just in case you need a little liquid courage before taking the stage. When it’s time for dinner, check out Ash—Bar on the hotel’s second floor.

If this is a first or second date, you might want to end the night after dinner. But if it’s a special outing with a significant other, consider spending the night in one of The Siren’s suites or the penthouse.

Movie night at Ford Wyoming Drive In

10400 Ford Rd., Dearborn

If you’re searching for a more low key date idea, head to the Ford Wyoming Drive In for movie night. This drive-in theater has five screens and shows different movies every week. At the time of writing, featured films included “Civil War,” “Monkey Man,” “The First Omen,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” and “Dawn of the Dead” (1978).

There’s a full-service concession stand if you get hungry, but you can also bring your own food and beverages. If you know your fellow moviegoer’s favorite snack, earn some brownie points by packing it.

Stroll along the Dequindre Cut

Dequindre Cut Greenway

Looking for a free date idea? Take a leisurely stroll along the Dequindre Cut. This urban greenway — formerly a Grand Trunk Railroad line — spans two miles and features tons of artwork and graffiti. Get to know your date as you walk, talk, and take in the sights.

If you get thirsty during your stroll, stop at Dequindre Cut Freight Yard, an outdoor beer and wine garden located near the Wilkins Street entrance of the Cut, for some libations. You’ll also pass by Eastern Market, Campbell Terrace, Outdoor Adventure Center, and a few other local attractions.

Explore The Z Lot

1234 Library St.

A parking garage might seem like an odd suggestion for a date spot, but hear us out. Z Lot isn’t your average parking garage. It’s one of the largest in Metro Detroit, but more importantly, it’s home to about 100 murals created by local and international street artists. Up on the roof, you can take in some incredible views of the city too.

Afterward, check out The Belt, the adjoining alley where you’ll find more murals and artwork, plus some bars and restaurants.

Feather bowling and beer at Cadieux Café

4300 Cadieux Rd.

Cadieux Café, a family run spot on Detroit’s east side, has been a local staple for decades — and for good reason. Quaint and casual, Cadieux Café is known for its steamed mussels served in pails, massive selection of Belgian beers, and an obscure sport called feather bowling. The sport, which can be best described as a mix between bocce and curling, will provide you and your date an opportunity to experience something different (there are currently very few places you can play in the U.S.) and engage in some friendly competition.

Also worth noting: Cadieux Café was featured on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations!

Get your (arcade) game on at Checker Bar

124 Cadillac Square

Beer, burgers, arcade games — Checker Bar has everything you need for a laidback date. Detroit’s original arcade bar features tons of classic games like Ms. Pac Man, Centipede, and Mortal Kombat in a fun, no-frills environment.

In addition to burgers, Checker Bar also serves up plenty of pizzas, a wide variety of wings, a selection of sandwiches, and other bar foods.

Don’t forget to snap a picture in the photo booth to memorialize your time together.
