Where you should live in Michigan, based on your zodiac sign

Whether you’re a bold-yet-reserved Taurus or an out-there Aries, Michigan has something for every Zodiac sign.

One of my absolute favorite aspects of living in Michigan is that it has something for everyone. There are rural, country farms where all you can see is corn for miles on end; there are bustling downtowns and metropolitan areas; and there is every type of nature, from waterfalls to sandy beaches to untouched forests. 

Just as Michigan has something for every type of dweller and adventurer, the Mitten State also holds something for every type of zodiac sign. Whether you’re a hard-and-fast believer in the power of astrology over your day-to-day or just a casual observer of the stars, here’s where your zodiac sign matches up to where you should live in Michigan. (And just as a disclaimer, this is a just-for-fun guide, so don’t up and move on our account!)

1. Aries/Ram: Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is full of variety and bold experiences, making it the ideal place for those born under this fire sign. With their sheer confidence and playful attitudes, Aries are all about chasing action and excitement. One of Aries’s major dislikes? Inactivity. They can certainly avoid ever getting bored in Grand Rapids, thanks to the city’s ongoing schedule of events and boundless outdoor activities, such as biking, hiking, and water sports. (They’re also pretty competitive and thrive in both team and individual sports, so a local sporting team or gym will also be a boon.)

Aries are also known for their love of new experiences. Grand Rapids’s lively downtown offers an endless supply of festivals, bars, breweries, and shops to explore, as well as lots of opportunities for Aries to get involved with the community and make their mark.

2. Taurus/Bull: St. Joseph

As a Taurus myself, I can speak to this sign confidently, because we Tauruses have a specific set of needs—we love nature and beauty, need plenty of quiet downtime, and are constantly yearning for peace. And yet, we still need activity and a physical outlet as well as goals to strive for. The classic “bull-headed” sign is a contrasting personality of goal-striving and peace-seeking, which is why a small beach town like St. Joseph makes perfect sense. 

The town offers a mix of activity and downtime, with seasonal tourism and a close-knit community of locals. Like Tauruses, the town is grounded and loyal and can provide the year-round stability that’s so important to stubborn bulls.

3. Gemini/Twins: Ann Arbor 

Ann Arbor is the ideal town for curious and intellectual Geminis in need of mental stimulation and variety. This college town and cultural hub is brimming with bookstores, cafes, events, and a vibrant, artistic community balanced out by tech-driven industries and a strong focus on community. 

Geminis are versatile and charismatic, much like Ann Arbor itself, and they thrive with the opportunity to have hobbies and versatile interests, which is exactly what can be found in this always-busy town. Want to learn a new skill, drop in on a class, or experience a new cultural event? You’ll be sure to find it in Ann Arbor. Interestingly enough, Geminis are also said to be misunderstood, which could be said for some U of M fans, am I right?

4. Cancer/Crab: Glen Arbor 

As a water sign, it’s only fitting that Cancers will best thrive by the water. This homebody sign would love living in the peaceful town of Glen Arbor, fully surrounded by water, thanks to its placement tucked into the Leelanau Peninsula. Cancers are known as homebodies with deep sensitivity and empathy, which aligns with the town’s calm and friendly vibes. 

Glen Arbor was even named one of the most beautiful places in America, so for a sign who looks for beauty around them, it’s the ideal environment. Cancers are also very protective and loyal to their families, so if they’re not able to live by their loved ones, a strong community with connections will be important to them—also another key aspect of Glen Arbor’s strong-knit town ties.

5. Leo/Lion: Detroit

Well, this one almost seems too obvious, doesn’t it? The Leo sign is obviously of the lion, which is synonymous with Detroit. Not only is the lion the mascot of our beloved Lions NFL football team, but the lion represents all that Detroit is known for, from grit to strength. 

Leos are also notoriously known for their love of the spotlight, and Detroit offers plenty of opportunities for self-expression, from a thriving arts and music scene to businesses and communities centered on innovation. 

What better city than Detroit with its rich history, legendary music, and notable innovation? Leos are all about self-expression and living life to the fullest. Detroit’s thriving arts scene takes center stage. The city is the birthplace of cultural movements, like Motown, techno, jazz, and hip-hop. It is the perfect place for Leos to bring their natural leadership, passion, and ingenuity. Leos also love the sun (picture that lion languishingly proudly in the sunlight), so Detroit in the summer is ripe with warm-weather activities, beaches, and boating.

6. Virgo/Maiden: Holland

Virgos love structure, details, methodical work, and efficiency, so I can’t think of a better-suited town than Holland, Michigan.  Holland was settled by Dutch immigrants, who applied their values of hard work, organization, order, and cleanliness to both their trades and their town. Honestly, looking at the list of Virgo traits, I wouldn’t be shocked if Virgos built Holland, because they’re the ultimate productivity-based and detail-oriented signs. 

Holland is renowned for its meticulously planned layouts, precision architecture, community-driven planning, and perfectionist details that shine throughout the town. It takes a love of planning to pull off one of the world’s largest Tulip Festivals, yet Holland shines on the task every single year.

7. Libra/Scale: Saugatuck

Libras are known for their peaceful nature, deep appreciation for beauty, and easy ability to connect with their community. The Libra sign can find all of those traits in Saugatuck, which offers a balance of natural beauty and lively arts culture. Known as “Michigan’s Art Coast,” Saugatuck can appeal to Libra’s eye for aesthetics and keen sense of design with its quaint, colorful downtown, art galleries, and boutiques. 

Many Libras are also known for their artistic and musical abilities (singers Eminem, Cardi B, and Usher are all famous Libras). Plus, opportunities for wine tasting or sunbathing by the water offer Libras the chance to nurture their important relationships and social life with ease.

8. Scorpio/Scorpio: Marquette

The sweeping and dramatic views of Lake Superior and the hidden nature of the nearby Huron Mountains meld perfectly with the mysterious and somewhat elusive Scorpios. The rugged nature of Marquette, combined with its reputation as an introspective, remote city, makes it ultra-comfortable for the mysterious Scorpio sign. Scorpios feel deeply, have a keen eye for uncovering hidden truths, and possess a magnetic presence. Sound familiar? 

As another water sign, Scorpios tend to be drawn to water, while other traits, such as being resourceful, determined, and resilient, are ideal for braving the unpredictable weather in the Upper Peninsula. Just like life in the UP, Scopios aren’t for everyone, so this town-sign combo is a match made in Michigan heaven.

9. Sagittarius/Archer: Kalamazoo 

Sagittarius signs have a love of learning, so they’ll fit right in in Kalamazoo as well as nearby East Lansing, home to the prestigious Michigan State University. This sign is also adventurous and freedom-seeking, so they’ll find plenty of opportunities for both with breweries, music, family-friendly events, hiking trails, and a whopping 83 accessible lakes. 

Sagittarius signs are known for “going big,” and Kalamazoo offers ways to do that, with access to major airports like Detroit and Chicago—also appealing to their love of traveling. Kalamazoo is known for being an easy-going, affordable town, which is in line with the sign’s reputation as a lucky, happy sign that enjoys trying new things.

10. Capricorn/Sea Goat: Lansing

Capricorns are ambitious, grounded, and disciplined. With their powerful presence and determination, Capricorns will be right at home in the state’s capital. As the state’s political center, Lansing has a rich history and strong sense of civic pride. Capricorns can thrive in this city, which offers a wealth of professional and educational opportunities. Plus, Lansing’s year-round festivals are sure to appeal to a Capricorn’s visionary side. 

While this sign is known for being loyal and dependable, they can sometimes veer towards working too much. Fortunately, Lansing also offers plenty of space for downtime and leisure. City-dwelling Capricons will find breaks from their hard work in biking, hiking, an Art Path, kayaking, beaches, and plenty of high-quality restaurants. Lansing is also the hub of over 30 miles of trails that extend throughout Michigan.

11. Aquarius/Water-bearer: Ypsilanti

The Aquarius sign is known for being inventive and experimental, with a desire to make the world a better place. And what better area to do that than in Ypsilanti, which is known for its progressive spirit and creative framework? 

Like many people born under the Aquarius sign, Ypsilanti has a reputation for being quirky and slightly free-spirited, with close access to Ann Arbor and an offbeat art scene. The small town with a big city feel has even been described as “groovy,” which fits with Aquarius’s desire to innovate and go against the grain with a rebellious nature.

12. Pisces/Two Fish: Traverse City

Daydreaming, intuitive Pisces will feel right at home in beautiful Traverse City, which boasts plenty of secret spots to tuck away for quiet time. Nestled along Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay with boundless natural beauty everywhere you look, Traverse City is a spot made for dreaming and creativity. 

Along with near-storybook aesthetics, including rolling hills, vineyards, cafes, and local art galleries, Traverse City also provides access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Pisces are also highly adaptable, a trait that will come in handy when living through Traverse City’s winters—although the area receives some protection from the bay, it still experiences around 125-145 inches of snow every winter.
