We’ve got fewer events than usual on this week’s list (probably since everyone is still getting into the flow of the new year after the holidays). But the events we’ve included are really special.
Highlights include the largest free winter festival in the US, skiing and dog sledding in the UP, a rare opportunity to trek through Mackinac Island in the wintertime, and more.
As always, I’d love to hear your suggestions! If you know of an upcoming event you’d like me to highlight, please send me a note here (suggestions should be submitted at least one week before the event).

Man detained after trying to enter Romulus school with gun (The Detroit News): A 44-year-old man was arrested after trying to enter Romulus Middle School and firing a gun nearby, prompting a lockdown Tuesday morning. Police say no one was hurt, a handgun was recovered, and quick action by school staff and first responders prevented a potential tragedy at the Metro Detroit school.
Soo locks to close for seasonal maintenance (WLUC): The Soo Locks will close to all marine traffic starting Jan. 15 for about 10 weeks of critical winter maintenance, reopening in March. The seasonal shutdown allows crews to repair gates, inspect systems, and prepare the MacArthur and Poe Locks, which move about 80 million tons of cargo each year.
State announces date for its shortest fishing season (MI Advance): Anglers can take part in Black Lake’s incredibly limited lake sturgeon season starting Saturday, Feb. 7, with a harvest cap of just six fish. The season opens at 8 a.m. and often ends within minutes; anglers must register in advance and stop fishing immediately once the limit is reached.
