Although Michigan is home to hundreds of waterfalls, when people hear the word “waterfall” here, their mind usually goes to Tahquamenon Falls.

And while Tahquamenon is indeed the largest waterfall in the state, you might be surprised to learn that it’s not the tallest. That distinction actually goes to Houghton-Douglass Falls in the Keweenaw Peninsula, and thanks to recent upgrades, it’s now easier than ever to visit.

Michigan Democratic US Senate candidates debate (Michigan Advance): With early voting already underway and the Aug. 4 primary just days away, the race for Michigan’s Democratic US Senate nomination turned personal in its final debate, with Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens trading attacks over finances and transparency.

Trump talks in Michigan (Associated Press): President Donald Trump used a stop at a GM testing facility in Milford to tout his tariffs and manufacturing agenda while rallying support for Republican candidates ahead of the state’s Aug. 4 primary. The visit came as businesses and critics warn Trump’s new tariffs on Canada could hurt Michigan’s auto industry and economy.

Family killed in Grand Haven murder-suicide (The Detroit News): Authorities say a Grand Haven Township mother and her six children were killed in a homicide before the father died by suicide in a house fire. Investigators are still working to determine a motive.

Michigan is known for its natural beauty, and one of my very favorite Michigan memories has been visiting various waterfalls throughout the state. We’ve visited some around the Pictured Rocks area and, of course, the famous Tahquamenon Falls.

Tahquamenon holds the title of being Michigan’s largest waterfall in sheer volume and width, churning through 50,000 gallons of water per second. However, there is a separate location that steals the crown as Michigan’s tallest waterfall: Houghton-Douglass Falls in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the UP.

In the spring, the falls opened to visitors, and the managing director of Visit Keweenaw, Jesse Wiederhold, describes the area as one of Michigan’s “must-see” sights.

The Houghton-Douglass Falls underwent renovations in 2025 to make the area more accessible for visitors. Some of the updates included an improved parking area, a bridge, and a vault toilet. Visitors are always welcome to the falls, but if you have never been, here are a few tips (and a few fun facts!) about the falls.
