Schools across the state are starting back up, and it might feel like summer is winding down, but there’s still no shortage of amazing events across Michigan this weekend.
Highlights include an awesome display of hot air balloons in southwest Michigan, one of the biggest annual events in the UP, a Renaissance festival in Metro Detroit, and more.

Study: Michigan teacher pay lags behind rest of country (WOOD-TV): Michigan teachers have seen the largest inflation-adjusted salary decline in the nation over the past 30 years, with average pay falling 29% from its 1995 peak, according to a new Michigan State University study. The report found starting teacher pay has also fallen to 45th nationally, while nearly 72% of surveyed Michiganders support increasing starting salaries.
U-M picks new president (Bridge Michigan): The University of Michigan has selected Vanderbilt Provost C. Cybele Raver as its next president, making her the second woman to lead the university. Raver, a developmental psychology researcher, is expected to begin Dec. 1 pending approval by the U-M Board of Regents.
Donated human skull not medical specimen (CBS News): A human skull dropped off at a Chelsea Goodwill earlier this year has been identified as belonging to a Black woman who was likely between 20 and 49 years old, police said. The skull was turned over to the FBI for DNA testing as investigators work to determine the woman’s identity and how her remains ended up at the donation center.
