Federal shutdown hits Michigan programs (Bridge MI): Henry Ford Health is pausing most telehealth visits for Medicare patients as Michigan starts to feel the growing impact of the federal shutdown. Head Start programs may soon suspend services, environmental protections are stalled, and federal courts are cutting back operations. Economists warn that if the shutdown drags on, Michigan could lose hundreds of millions in wages, grants, and small business funding.
Animal rights group plans MI Supreme Court appeal in chimp case (IPR): An animal rights group is planning to ask the Michigan Supreme Court to recognize six chimpanzees at an Upper Peninsula zoo as legal “persons.” Lower courts rejected the claim, saying the animals are property, not people. The group hopes for a groundbreaking ruling that could grant the chimps habeas corpus rights and move them to a nature preserve.
MI attorney charged with prison drug smuggling (Freep): A Kent County attorney has been charged with multiple felonies for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into a mid-Michigan prison. Prosecutors say 42-year-old Jayne Ashley Carver was caught passing suspected Suboxone and other substances to an inmate during a visit at Central Michigan Correctional Facility. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
