In an op-ed, Mai Xiong, a current State Representative and candidate for re-election in Michigan’s 13th House District, advocates for a stronger future for Michigan women and families.
When I became a mom, I was struck by a feeling of profound responsibility to shape a better future for not only my children, but those throughout our broader Michigan community.
I wanted my children to see leaders who look like them and who understand their distinctive stories — leaders who can relate to their struggles and help them realize their dreams and aspirations.
I wanted them to grow up knowing that they have a voice that deserves to be heard, regardless of their heritage, gender, or economic circumstance. I hoped that one day they may realize that their voices truly make a difference.
It was with that sense of hope that I first stepped into public service four years ago as a Macomb County commissioner.
Running for office was both an exhilarating and scary leap for me, a Hmong immigrant born in a refugee camp to Laotian parents who mercifully found asylum in the US. At the time, I also was juggling the responsibilities of running a small business while raising my four young children with my husband Adam.
Campaigning across the county for that seat, door-knocking, and attending community events with my kids at my side, proved to be a revelation. The experience connected me more deeply with my neighbors and community. It instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of civic engagement and drove home the reality that every vote counts in ensuring our democracy.
As a mom and small business owner, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to balance the demands of work with the needs of a family. I also know the joy and stress that come with starting a family, from pregnancy to birth and beyond.
That’s why, as your state representative for the 13th House District, one of the first pieces of legislation that I introduced was to establish a scholarship program that supports students experiencing financial hardship while training to become doulas. Doulas provide crucial physical and emotional support and guidance to both expectant and new mothers.
Medical professionals know that doula care can significantly enhance maternal and infant health, but there are simply not enough of them. That means far too many families simply can’t access these essential services.
Investing in the next generation of doulas ensures that more families can find and benefit from compassionate and informed support during one of life’s most consequential times.
My commitment to women and families includes my deep conviction that women have the right to make their own choices about their bodies. I support efforts that advance, as a fundamental right, women’s ability to access quality, appropriate reproductive healthcare services. As a mom of two girls, this is personal. I simply want my daughters – and your daughters – to be able to make their own decisions about their bodies.
I’m also deeply committed to supporting immigrant communities by helping families navigate the complexities of our legal system and find sustainable pathways to building solid, productive lives.
As a refugee, whose parents fought for the very same freedoms that we hold dear, I am driven by the belief that everyone deserves a fair opportunity to contribute to and to live the American dream.
Five years ago, I didn’t know that my story would include the honor of serving you in the Michigan State House. But perhaps the path was inevitable, driven by my desire to use my voice to advocate for women, families, and those who call Michigan home.
During my journey, I’ve been fortunate to witness firsthand the impact that engaged and passionate leadership can have.
These days, my children often ask if I will run for president. I tell them, humbly, that, as a naturalized US citizen, my path will not take me to the White House. But I make clear their prospects are limitless.
I have great hope that they – and all young people – will see their potential in shaping the future through the democratic process. It’s amazing how we can make our dreams a reality in this country. I want my children, and all children, to grow up knowing that.
As I continue to serve our community, I remain dedicated to championing the causes that matter most to our families. My promise is to keep fighting for fair policies, equitable opportunities, and a future where every individual has the chance to thrive.
This November, as I run for re-election, my children will continue to accompany me. Together, we’ll knock on doors and listen to the issues that impact our community. I’m grateful to continue having the opportunity to serve the constituents in Warren, Roseville, and St. Clair Shores. It’s my honor to share with my children the ambitious goal of working toward a better future for all families.
Thank you to those who are helping to build a stronger, more inclusive Michigan.
