MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.

Here are nine things you need to know this week:

UP IN SMOKE: Eight of 12 local ballot proposals that had sought to expand recreational marijuana sales across the state of Michigan—including in Howell—were soundly rejected by voters at the polls this month. One proposal to allow new pot shops in Niles was approved.

MARKET UPDATE: Recent reports show that Michigan’s marijuana market is flooded with cannabis products, but sales are still down—in part because prices are still at all-time lows

TOP SHOPS: The Block FM recently assembled a list of the best cannabis dispensaries in southwest Michigan—though it’s unclear exactly how the stores earned a spot on the list.

AD CRACKDOWN: The Detroit City Council is reportedly considering new restrictions on marijuana advertisements in the city—including banning ads from being within 1,000 feet of schools, libraries, parks, and other so-called “sensitive” properties where kids congregate.

SORRY CHICAGO: Dispensaries in New Buffalo are reportedly luring thousands of Illinois residents into Michigan with affordable prices, freebies, and enormous product selections.

MICHIGAN MEDIA: Another cannabis columnist is joining the Michigan media scene this month with the launch of a column at the Detroit Metro Times dedicated exclusively to weed.

END OF AN ERA: The remaining assets of Skymint, which was once the largest marijuana growing operation in Michigan, reportedly went up for auction this month. That included ovens, centrifuges, laptops, lighting, and a candy production line for cannabis-infused edibles.

CANNABIS COLLEGE: Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie is making headlines for new programs that teach students the ins and outs of the recreational weed business.

POT PUSHBACK: Trucenta, a cannabis company with facilities in Hazel Park and Warren, is reportedly fighting back against accusations of misconduct, describing the stance of Michigan regulators as “defamatory and one-sided” in a recent statement to the Detroit Metro Times
