2. Furniture City Creamery
Why fix what isnโt broken? Last year in our first annual Grand Rapids Food Guide, Furniture City Creamery came in second place. Furniture City feels very strongly about making scratch-made ice cream and even if some ice cream flavors take three days to make, that doesnโt deter them. If anything, they feel empowered and slightly frantic about churning out (see what I did there?) their next flavor.
Pro tip: if peanut butter oreo has made its return, you wonโt want to miss it.
They are constantly trying new things, so if you find a favorite flavor, donโt expect it to stick around long. Itโs sad but trueโtheyโre ice cream geniuses that canโt be stopped and when inspiration strikes they must innovate!
Is dairy unkind to you? Do you abide by a vegan diet? Donโt sweat it. Theyโve got you covered. Their vegan flavors are scratch-made with coconut milk.
Furniture City Creamery is also pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your favorite doggo and treat them to a tasty pup cup.
1. Frosty Boy
Frosty Boy remains the unchallenged winner for the Grand Rapids Food Guide. Two years and going strong. This ice cream shop has history on its side. After a ten year hiatus, Frosty Boy returned with a bang. The pull of nostalgia combined with quality, local ingredients made it easy for Frosty Boy to reopenโand its original location too.
Frosty Boy doesnโt believe in serving winter during the cold season, so you have to pack your visits in during the spring and summer. However, thereโs something classic about ice cream and summer sunshine, and itโs reassuring to know that despite being only open for a limited time they still maintain their cult following.
They have vegan and gluten free offerings, all of which are handmade in store. Their soft-serve flavors and flurries are timeless classics, and the dedicated Frosty Boy fans appreciate a tasty ice cream on a warm summer evening.
