Welcome to your weekend game plan!
This week’s highlights include marathons in two major cities, fall fun, and even a festival dedicated to the humble earthworm.
We’re also debuting a new feature this week—a numbered map that shows you the location of each event on our list (just click on the map to scroll around). Please let me know if you like this feature by hitting the thumbs up at the bottom of this newsletter. And if you have any feedback, let me know.
As always, I’d love to hear your suggestions! If you know of an upcoming event you’d like me to highlight, please send me a note here (suggestions should be submitted at least one week before the event).

Multiple MI airports refuse to show video blaming Democrats for shutdown (WOOD-TV): Several Michigan airports, including Gerald R. Ford in Grand Rapids, Lansing’s Capital Region International, and Flint’s Bishop International Airport, say they won’t play a Department of Homeland Security video blaming Democrats for the federal shutdown. Airport officials cited policies against showing partisan or political content. Detroit Metro confirmed the video is playing on monitors in TSA-controlled areas.
MDOT to hold public hearing on proposed rules changes (MLive): The Michigan Department of Transportation is proposing new rules that would ban living or camping in cars at rest areas, carpool lots, and other MDOT property for more than 48 hours. The rules also prohibit panhandling and require dogs to be leashed. Public hearings will be held Oct. 22, with comments accepted through Nov. 20 before final approval in 2026.
Gordie Howe Bridge opening delayed (FOX 2): The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been postponed to early 2026 as crews complete testing and quality reviews. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority says construction is nearly done, with both bridge decks now connected, but agencies need time to prepare for operations at what will be the largest US-Canada border crossing.
