“I like to give back to my community by reaching out to our state and federal representatives regarding important issues and educating others on how they can do the same. I know it’s not much, but every message I send is met with a response letting me know what the reps and senators are doing to support us..” — Nadia Shelton
“Our office personnel here at American Plastic Toys donate weekly to wear jeans. We raise money for Hospitality House and present them with a check every January.” — Jannine Walsh-Mullen
“What a great question to ask in these crazy troubling times in our country. I give back to my community in a variety of ways. I bake cookies, along with many other local women, each week for a free lunch program offered to ANYONE who wants a lunch. Weekly they have been averaging 700 meals served. I volunteer for community sponsored events that need help throughout the year and at my church weekly by teaching Sunday school or helping with parking. My newest give back to the community is making and taking lunch to some of our smaller businesses in town. No strings attached just a note of thanks for being them. I just started this fall doing this in my new retirement time. It happens about 2 times a month. I check with them first and set a date so as to not conflict with their schedule. I drop it off and disappear. Those are my big give backs. I love to do small things (Random Acts of Kindness) as well. Never know when it might change someone’s day. I was raised by a very giving mom who taught me the joy in sharing with others. Simple acts of kindness can make a difference. I know it does for me.” — DJ Logan
“One way I give back to my community is to volunteer as a mentor at a local elementary school, spending an hour every week with one student who has been identified as needing one to one time with a caring adult. This seems like a small way to help, but my first mentee graduated from high school this year in spite of a slew of circumstances in his early life which made this unlikely to happen, and I believe my mentorship played a small role in his success.” — Carol Selden
“I donate to the charitable union monthly. It is a small donation but special to me in honor of my mother. I remember as a child/teenager going to the charitable union with my mother and being able to pick out things that I needed for school. I especially loved when I could find a good book! This place holds a special place in my heart.” — Tanesha Allen
“Volunteering is very fulfilling for me! My church Trinity Lutheran in Clinton Township supports local ministries including MCREST, Hope For Haiti, HARP Mission: Helping Appalachian Rural Peoples, Compassion Pregnancy Center, Family of God in Detroit, Groundwork Guatemala, and Habitat for Humanity, and more. We collect donations, donate money, and volunteer for these missions. I have personally done missions in the US and abroad, in southeast Ohio with Harp Mission, In Cap Haitian with Hope for Haiti, Camp Restore Detroit, and many other outreach ministries with my church. I’m part of the local nonprofit organization that plans and runs the annual Grace Music Festival at Lake St Clair Metropark/Metro Beach in July; we highlight and support many local nonprofit ministries at the festival. I have volunteered with family and friends, and made many new friends in the states and abroad. It gives me joy to help others!” — Lisa Duffer
“I’m active in our local Friends of the Library organization. I make and sell greeting cards to benefit our two county libraries. The cards have brought in close to $6,000 in the 11 years where I’ve been keeping track. I pay for all of my supplies.” — Elaine Lovitt
