Welcome to another edition of our hand-picked Michigan events for this weekend.
Highlights include late-night shopping in Kalamazoo, a menorah lighting in Grand Rapids to kick off Chanukah, and much more.
As always, I’d love to hear your suggestions! If you know of an upcoming event you’d like me to highlight, please send me a note here (suggestions should be submitted at least one week before the event).

Ranked-choice voting petition needs 200K signatures before summer deadline (WLNS): RankMIVote says it still needs about 200,000 more signatures to put ranked-choice voting on Michigan’s 2026 ballot, with six months left to gather them. Organizers insist the drive isn’t in trouble, though they estimate only a “40% chance” of qualifying. Supporters argue RCV offers fairer elections, while clerks and some researchers warn it’s confusing and hard to audit.
MI Senate OKs plan for brownfield site funding boost (WCMU): The Michigan Senate approved a major expansion of the state’s brownfield redevelopment program, which helps revitalize contaminated properties across the state through financial incentives. Along with raising its tax-capture cap from $1.6B to $3.5B, lawmakers advanced a plan creating a 130-member Strategic Advisory Board to set long-term economic strategy.
UP and Northern Michigan housing projects receive funding (WLUC): Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced three redevelopment projects backed by the state’s Revitalization and Placemaking program, expected to create 60 new housing units in Escanaba, Marquette, and Cadillac. The grants, totaling over $2 million, will help turn long-vacant buildings into mixed-use developments and new apartments.
