As the cold creeps into Michigan, our weekend events begin to ebb and flow.
Nevertheless, there’s always something to do in the Mitten! This week’s highlights include a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Detroit, a women-centered arts festival, and holiday markets galore.
As always, I’d love to hear your suggestions! If you know of an upcoming event you’d like me to highlight, please send me a note here (suggestions should be submitted at least one week before the event).

Detroit elects first woman mayor (AP News): Mary Sheffield has been elected Detroit’s next mayor—the first woman ever to lead the city. The current city council president, defeated Pastor Rev. Solomon Kinloch, will take office in January, succeeding Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running for governor. Sheffield says her priorities include improving public safety, education, and neighborhood investment.
Snow headed to Michigan this weekend (MLive): Michigan will get its first true blast of winter starting this weekend, with cold air and warm lake waters combining to bring the season’s first lake-effect snow. Light accumulations are expected mainly on grass—1–3 inches in parts of Lower Michigan and up to 6 inches in the UP. The cold snap will be brief, with temps rebounding into the 50s by mid-November.
Michigan suspends dealership license for selling used cars as new (WXYZ): The Michigan Department of State has suspended LaFontaine Chevrolet Buick GMC of St. Clair’s license, accusing the dealership of selling used loaner vehicles as new. The dealership calls it a paperwork issue caused by outdated state laws and says it’s working with officials to resolve the matter.
