The average rent in Michigan is about $1,379 a month, but what that money gets you depends entirely on where you live.
In some cities, it might cover a small studio apartment, while in others, it can rent an entire home with a yard and garage.
To find out what that monthly average can get you in different communities across the state, The ’Gander’s Chaunie Brusie took a look at rental listings from Detroit to Marquette and brings us the results.

Officials gather for Saline data center groundbreaking (Bridge Michigan): State officials and leaders from OpenAI and Oracle broke ground on “The Barn,” a $56 billion AI data center near Saline that is expected to be Michigan’s largest and begin operations in 2028. While supporters say the project will create jobs and power AI innovation, critics continue to raise concerns about tax incentives, energy use and the development’s local impact.
Gordie Howe Bridge nears completion (The Detroit News): Construction of the $4.7 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge is nearly complete, but its opening remains uncertain as President Donald Trump reportedly seeks concessions from Canada amid ongoing trade tensions. Michigan and Canadian leaders are pushing for the bridge to open as critics accuse the administration of delaying approval for political and economic reasons.
Meteor streaks over Michigan (MLive): A bright green-blue fireball lit up Michigan’s night sky Monday, with nearly 200 reports across several states and Canada, including sightings from dozens of Michigan communities. The meteor appeared around 10:42 p.m., and skywatchers believe any surviving debris may have landed in central and northern Michigan.

According to our good friend and my personal nighttime scroll companion, Zillow, the average home rental price in Michigan as of May 2026 is $1,379. However, as you can probably guess, what that average price actually gets you varies widely by location. A rental in Flint may not fetch the same price as Ann Arbor, and a rental in a rural farming town will definitely not be the same price as a rental in a beach town.
Surprisingly, Zillow also notes that rent prices have only increased by an average of $5 compared to last year, so I guess that’s good news. But in an economy where purchasing a home can feel widely out of reach for so many, rental properties may become all the more popular. Here is what you can expect rental prices to look like throughout Michigan, with an average of around $1,300 to $1,400.
