Summer in Michigan isn’t just about beach days and sipping brews at festivals (although there’s no shortage of that!). In fact, some of the best events happen long after the sun goes down. And best of all, they’re completely free.
I’m talking about celestial events. From meteor showers to eclipses, the night sky over Michigan is packed with them this summer.
Today, The ’Gander’s Sophie Boudreau brings us five cosmic experiences you’ll want to put on your calendar for summer 2026.
Plus: What Michigan festivals are you looking forward to?

Benson to recuse herself from governor’s race decisions (MLive): Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced a new election “firewall” policy ahead of her 2026 gubernatorial run, saying she will recuse herself from overseeing matters directly tied to the governor’s race. Benson said the policy is meant to avoid conflicts of interest while maintaining her role as the state’s top elections official.
GOP gubernatorial candidates face challenges to signatures (Bridge Michigan): Republican gubernatorial candidates Perry Johnson and John James are facing competing challenges over allegedly fraudulent petition signatures submitted to qualify for Michigan’s August primary ballot. A super PAC backing James filed the challenge against Johnson’s signatures, while a supporter of Johnson filed the challenge against James.
Native American remains found during home renovation (9&10 News): Authorities in Lake County are investigating after what are believed to be ancient Native American human remains were uncovered by a construction crew digging a basement beneath a home in Lake Township. Local officials said no foul play is suspected as they work with tribal officials to determine the age and origin of the remains before possible repatriation and reburial according to tribal customs.

Summer days in Michigan are unparalleled, whether you prefer to spend them sunbathing along the Great Lakes, hanging out in brewery beer gardens, or shopping ‘til you drop in charming small towns. But while there’s lots to love during waking hours, Michigan has its fair share of nighttime attractions, too—and we’re not talking about bars or clubs.
In fact, some of Mitten’s most memorable after-dark experiences occur out in the fresh air under the dazzling night sky. We’re talking, of course, about meteor showers, eclipses, and other celestial happenings, all of which are free to enjoy and endlessly beautiful.
Ready to secure a few otherworldly plans for summer 2026? Here are five celestial events in Michigan that deserve a spot on your calendar.

Many longtime readers of this newsletter are probably familiar with my Wednesday events list, where I list and map what’s going on each weekend here in Michigan. (If you’re not, you should be reading! Here’s a sample of what you can expect.)
And while it’s one of my favorite things I work on each week, trying to keep an eye on everything happening in Michigan can be daunting for just one person.
So, in the interest of making sure I don’t miss the events worth mentioning this summer, this week I want to know:

What are Michigan’s can’t-miss events this spring and summer?
