MICHIGAN—Cannabis is a big deal in Michigan—and there’s never a shortage of newsworthy headlines from the industry as the state inches closer to becoming the nation’s weed capital.
Here are seven things you need to know this week:
CANNABIS IN COMMUNITY: Lume Cannabis Co. is reportedly donating $50,000 to put toward a variety of community programs in Holly—including $10,000 for the city’s parks department and another $7,000 to install new, family-friendly playground equipment.
JOBS, JOBS, JOBS: More than 11,000 people took a job in Michigan’s cannabis industry last year, reportedly solidifying its spot as the nation’s second-largest cannabis market behind California. A total of 46,746 Michigan workers now work in the industry.
TESTING TROUBLE: Officials at a cannabis testing company (with a laboratory in Michigan) are reportedly warning about synthetic substances that could be harmful to consumers, which have been found in cannabis oil used for edibles and vape pens.
STATE SOLUTIONS: The state’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency reportedly plans to open a new testing lab by next year as a means to promote safety standards in the industry.
CHRONICLE OF CHRONIC: A new documentary from Delta College Public Media reportedly aims to shed light on Michigan’s cannabis industry. It’s called “Cannabusiness: Marijuana on Main Street”—and you can watch it online, right here.
420 OVERLOAD: Dutchie, the point-of-sale system used at dozens of dispensaries across Michigan, reportedly experienced a large outage on April 20 as customers lined up at stores to cash in on discounts for the 420 holiday. It lasted for about two hours.
NEW IN DETROIT: Calyxeum, a Detroit-based cannabis cultivator and processor owned by two Black women, reportedly opened its first retail dispensary in Detroit.
